Distro?
I just upgraded my Ubuntu Breezy system to the latest-and-last Breezy upgrade. X got b0rked. My solution was to downgrade to the version I was previously using, 6.8.2-69. That got it started right back up.

Debian Unstable
Current version of xserver-common is 6.8.2.dfsg.1-8. I can't figure out what it was before that. I've tried decrementing the version number but that doesn't do it.
As for the log file, the last entry was over a week ago, and it showed 27.5K lines of GetModeLine entries.

Tried going back several versions, no luck
I went back through the last 5 versions of xserver-common, and that wasn't it. Trying to figure out what I need to try downgrading.

I had to...
...run dpkg -i xserver-xorg*_6.8.2-69.deb to install all the packages, then it all worked again.

If your still looking for errors
See if you have a .xsession-errors file, not sure where it would be. As for the log file, the last entry was over a week ago, and it showed 27.5K lines of GetModeLine entries. You X log should have start up messages, if it doesn't have that it's not getting anywhere towards starting. Try just typing X at the command line and see what it returns. That should try to start X Windows without going through the normal startup routines. You will probably have to be logged in as root to do that. Jay

Yeah, it had startup, followed by the ModeLine garbage
I upgraded to the XOrg server and now at least I get the nVidia splash screen before it halts. But now when I switch to tty7 to check out the error line it completely hangs. Will have to try again tonight and write down the error message. I'll have the laptop going at the same time so I can look stuff up as I work.
It's amazing how much less frustrating this is when you've got a backup system.

One way to find that..
Run locate to see if you find it. If you don't, then as root run updatedb, then try again.

Found it ... not that it helps
The last entry from that was also several days back ... the last time it started. So I'm not even getting far enough for that to get saved.
Now I do seem to be triggering XKeepsCrashing. How do I look up what that's recording, or otherwise use it?

is the port being used by something else?

Think it's a mouse issue, believe it or not
Tried launching X directly, without using gdm or startx or anything else. Saw an error message about /proc/dev/mice (iirc) not existing. Verified it's there, but just started troubleshooting this idea.
