New Anyone got a good pointer for setting up squid?
Setting it up as a caching proxy. Don't need it as an httpd accellerator. I thought it should be easy, and it probably is, but the conf file is hyarge. I'd rather not spend the next four hours reading it to learn I only need to uncomment the default http port.

New Webmin is for a server
I'm not setting up a webserver. I'm just trying to use it as a client to speed up websurfing a little bit.

New It was pretty easy using the Debian package

New You just need to skim.
Few tags need changing. You might want to change cache_dir and you'll probably need to change or add one or more http_access tags. That should be all you need.

New Install it as a .deb and point your browser to it
Configured in the Debian package as a localhost access only thinger. PERFECT for what you want.

New Should I put it before or after privoxy?
I'm thinking point the browser at squid, and squid at privoxy, that way squid will be caching something that's already been sanitized. Sound right?

New I dropped Privoxy. Adblock + Flashblock works very well.
AFAIK, Privoxy still does stupid things like [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=185843|this]. [link|http://adblock.mozdev.org/|Adblock] and [link|http://flashblock.mozdev.org/installation.html|Flashblock] don't seem to cause me problems like Privoxy did.

Why do you use it? TIA.

[edit:] typo in Subject.

Cheers,
Scott.

New Inertia
I've used it since it was Junkbuster. It always did well enough that I didn't see the need to change. Will look at the two you mentioned.

[edit]

Just looked at adblock. One thing privoxy has is you can keep your rules up-to-date with the list they maintain. Decentralizes the arms race with the ad merchants.

It also handles header re-writing, javascript and cookie controls, lots of stuff besides just the images.

New There is another plugin
That keeps a second list for adblock updated anytime you want. I use it, it is awesome.

[link|https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1136|Adblock.Filterset.G updater].

It freakin ROCKS.

It also can do javascript blocking as well. Pretty much any "defineable seperate URL object" can be blocked.

There are GREAT extensions for the cookies and javascript as well. Squid supports you putting any headers you want removed and added. Those being replacements as well.

I used to used something like "Infernal Nutscraper build 69" as the User Agent replacement for everyone at home.

I'd put squid ahead of privoxy if you are doing it right. Otherwise squid will miss much stuff that is should cache.

New "Ahead" in which direction?
So you're saying browser --> privoxy --> squid --> inet?

If I use adblock plus the updater plugin, does privoxy become redundant?

New Filterset was updated yesterday... Nice!
[link|http://www.pierceive.com/filtersetg/2005-10-10a.txt|Filterset.G] regex... I am impressed with the general command length saving skills, and forms of the regex. Nice.

I for one welcome our new regex Overlord.
