New Best live CD for a noob?
My mother has a desperately old PC that she can't reboot any more because it doesn't boot properly. She has been leaving it on and just letting it hibernate. I suspect crapfestation.

All she uses is email and web surfing. I told her about the alternative, and that I could send a live CD. I have a Knoppiz CD from a few months back. Okay, probably over a year. I just ordered a pack of Ubuntu disks, but the site said they won't ship until at least a week after the 5.10 release.

I know with Knoppix I can talk her through selecting the right options to get it all working, then install the current setup to the HD. I'm assuming Ubuntu can do the same? Is it so much better that it's worth waiting? If she can't get this fixed soon-ish, she's ready to drop a couple of hundred on a new box, which will probably be running XP.

New Obligatory Try Mepis
Just boot it, totally simple install, best hardware detection I've found...

It's OS center is really good for non-techs, too.

Try it, she'll like it.

Imric's Tips for Living
  • Paranoia Is a Survival Trait
  • Pessimists are never disappointed - but sometimes, if they are very lucky, they can be pleasantly surprised...
  • Even though everyone is out to get you, it doesn't matter unless you let them win.

Nothing is as simple as it seems in the beginning,
As hopeless as it seems in the middle,
Or as finished as it seems in the end.

New Ok, I'll grab it tonight

New Plans? What is this "plans" of which you speak?
No, I should more accurately have written, "Wife intervened."

I mean, she's the one who had power of attorney for a friend going in for quadruple bypass the next day. Why did I have to spend the whole night talking to her about it.

BTW If you really need someone to crack your chest open, stop your heart and start jabbing it with knives, get it done at the Cleveland Clinic. If it's good enough for the Saudi royal family, it's good enough for you. Our friend checked in at 5 a.m., and by 11:30 she was recoving in the ICU.

New Of course:
"Welcome Back, My Friends, to the Show that Never Ends! Ladies and Gentlemen, Emerson Lake and Palmer"

Well worth the wait for hacking through the title... And using your spacial simulation on it, you will really get 4 channel sound.

Besides, Emerson is (was, anyway, before the hand surgery) a keyboard Godh.

shrub●bish (Am., from shrub + rubbish, after the derisive name for America's 43 president; 2003) n. 1. a form of nonsensical political doubletalk wherein the speaker attempts to defend the indefensible by lying, obfuscation, or otherwise misstating the facts; GIBBERISH. 2. any of a collection of utterances from America's putative 43rd president. cf. BULLSHIT

New Kanotix is also good

Definitely more HD-install friendly than recent versions of Knoppix. I used to use Knoppix in my Linux admin class but had some stability issues once it was installed. Kanotix works a treat, however.

I've had problems with Mepis (and Mepis-Lite) on older hardware. I do agree it's extremely newbie-friendly.

[link|http://www.xandros.com/about/downloads.html|Xandros Open Circulation Edition ] is pretty good as well. I use Xandros Business Edition on my office PC at school.
