New m4p to ogg vorbis?
OK, I've moved a lot of my music collection to my Linux laptop, and I'm using amarok as my main music player.

I ripped my entire CD collection to my windows machine via iTunes, which meant the files were created in iTunes' "mp4" format (in quotes because it's, you know, not REALLY Mp4). They are not, however protected by any of that DRM crap. Which means that unlike the stuff I bought from the iTunes store, I can actually play these files on my linux machine without any difficulty.

Unfortunately, what I *can't* do is add them to the database that amarok uses to keep track of your music collection. It *plays* the file, but won't add it to the database. Very annoying.

ON the other hand, it will recognize ogg vorbis files just fine.

So what can I use to convert all these damn iTunes-ripped files into ogg vorbis files?

New Yer daft bastid.
I use iTunes to rip my stuff in good old 256K VBR MP3.

Re-rip, I say.

Transcoding is only going to trash the quality.

New Answering the wrong question
The right question is, "How do I get this app to read/write the tags in MP4s?" I agree transcoding would introduce suck ... that's why I didn't address it.

So is there any Free, lossless codec that supports meta-info tags? Seems the thing to do is rip to that, back up to DVD +/-R, and every time you want stuff in a new codec you transcode to that from the lossless original.

New I'm not an audiophile...
... nor do I hear well enough to miss what would be left out.

And I'm not keen on re-ripping 10 gigs of CDs. I could live with transcoding.

New They are mpeg4 encoded right?
