New $4,000,000,000 down the XBox drain
[link|http://theinquirer.net/?article=26497|http://theinquirer.net/?article=26497]

MICROSOFT is a company with deep pockets, but nevertheless, even we the rich and mighty INQ hacks had to suppress a shudder when it was revealed that the Xbox may have lost Microsoft upwards of $4 billion in four years. The company has always been willing to operate at a loss in order to establish itself in the gaming industry, and we reported back in July that they're willing to lose money on the Xbox 360 as well. $4 billion is still a massive loss to be making however, and one has to wonder how long and how much Microsoft bean counters have set aside for the Xbox franchise to start making money.

New ..considering buying one On Sale -
what better way to toss them some sucker bait, keep 'em on the path to maybe makin it -8,000,000,000?

A small price to pay for England for Decency and just plain Goodness.

New Don't.
Every XBox sale is one less sale to Sony or Nintendo or ...

The XBox just needs to be good enough to keep money from going to the competition. I don't think Bill really cares how much he's losing on it at this point. If it makes Sony spend more than they want, or keeps people from sending money to Sony, then he wins even if he loses.

Cheers,
Scott.
New In fact, they're on the record as losing money on this one.
Goal was to build share, not make money. XBox360 is supposed to be where they start raking in a profit.
When somebody asks you to trade your security for freedom, it isn't your freedom they're talking about.
New Do they make decent Linux boxes?
XBoxes are supposed to be pretty easy to mod to run Linux. But is it worth the effort?
New No
Pain in the butt to convert. You may screw MS out of a $100, but it'll cost you $200, and you could have had a nicer system for the same price.
New What about Soft-Modding.
No additional cost except for time.

You can still put a larger HD in, and the whole thing just works too.

New They should loose less on the 360
The XBox was a horrible money loser because it was a PC in a small case, and there where limits to how much Microsoft could cut the cost per box. Microsoft still looses money per XBox unit sold.

One of the points of the XBox 360 was moving to designed hardware from the ground up so it could be cheaper per unit. Don't know if MS will be taking a loss per unit on the XBox 360, but if they do it will be less.

Microsoft's game unit has only made money one quarter since the XBox came out, when Halo 2 hit they sold so many copies they managed a one time profit.
