New The other George W. Bush
Well, I saw that speech, and I didn't much like it. Oh, it was very well delivered, but the content was less than I had come to expect from this man. Lots of people liked it, for the wrong reasons. But it was a mediocre speech, lacking good ideas, and implying bad ideas.

[link|http://www.angelfire.com/ca3/marlowe/swatting.neworleans.html|I've said it before] and I'll say it again. New Orleans is a bad idea. It should never have been built below sea level. That was stupid. Some have suggested rebuilding on higher ground. I say fine, if they can find a suitable site, but what are the odds? A more promising approach is to fill in that hole and then build atop the fill.

But Bush didn't suggest either of these things. He called for new, stronger levees. That's not a real solution. Here we have a golden opporunity for a do-over. We can fix this horrible design. But Bush is already squandering the chance.

I think what's going on here is there are two of him.

I wasn't impressed with Dubya in 2000. I didn't even vote for him then. Then there came that stupid No Child Left Behind nonsense together with the senator from Chappaquiddick. But after 9/11 hit, we saw a differnet Bush. We saw a leader, a risk taker, a problem solver, not a mere manager or politician.

Some people didn't like that. 9/11 was a wake-up call to the nation, that we needed to [link|http://www.angelfire.com/ca3/marlowe/swatting.gwot.html|get rid of terrorism entirely]. Some of us woke up, and some of us put pillows over their heads and tried to sleep. I woke up. George W. Bush woke up. In the end, the world will be better for it.

But Dubya the politician never went away. He resurfaced the other night. He tried to pass himself off as President Bush, the leader, by using the same courgeous phreaseology. But I wasn't fooled. I've been around too long to be distracted by style. The substance was pure politics. No vision at all, no imagination, and an opportunity to lead squandered, for the sake of some opinion poll points.

Here's hoping this Dubya goes back underground soon. The world does not need another politician. What the world neads is leaders.

New What should he have said, specifically?
Anything?

What are your thoughts on [link|http://abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek/print?id=1136801|Clinton's comments]?

CLINTON: Well, that's what I think. I think this idea-- I think it's very important that Americans understand, you know, tax cuts are always popular, but about half of these tax cuts since 2001 have gone to people in my income group, the top 1 percent. I've gotten four tax cuts.

They're responsible for this big structural deficit, and they're not going away, the deficits aren't. Now, what Americans need to understand is that that means every single day of the year, our government goes into the market and borrows money from other countries to finance Iraq, Afghanistan, Katrina, and our tax cuts. We have never done this before. Never in the history of our republic have we ever financed a conflict, military conflict, by borrowing money from somewhere else.

STEPHANOPOULOS: The president is not going to move. What do Democrats do?

CLINTON: They should continue to oppose it, and they should make it an issue in the 2006 election, and they should make it an issue in the 2008 election. And they should hope, to goodness, for the sake of our country, that the cows don't come home before we have time to rectify it.

I mean, sooner or later, just think what would happen if the Chinese-- We're pressing the Chinese now, a country not nearly rich as America per capita, to keep loaning us money with low interest to cover my tax cut, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Katrina and at the same time to raise the value of their currency so their imports into our country will become more expensive, and our exports to them will become less expensive. And by the way, we don't want to let them buy any oil companies or anything like that.

So what if they just got tired of buying our debt? What if the Japanese got tired of doing it? Japan's economy is beginning to grow again. Suppose they decided they wanted to keep some of their money at home and invest it in Japan, because they're starting to grow?

We depend on Japan, China, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and Korea primarily to basically loan us money every day of the year to cover my tax cut and these conflicts and Katrina. I don't think it makes any sense. I think it's wrong.

Was it the politician Bush or the leader Bush who said that cutting spending and maintaining growth will let the federal government pay "whatever it takes" to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast without increasing taxes?

I think it's plain that Clinton's comments on running deficits to pay for things are correct.

Your occasional posts like this have shown me that you're not an automaton. But why not go the next step and tell us what you think should be done to rebuild New Orleans and how it should be paid for?

(Some of my comments are [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=221752|here] and [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=222643|here], and (on the tax issues) [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=225166|here].)

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?

New Nit re N.O.
Filling / rebuilding atop - will only accelerate the 'compacting' -and lowering- of that area - per some geo-physics types, recently expounding on the dilemma.

As to the compromise between such 'facts' and the intangibles like the er ethos of the place, the necessity of a Port there, etc. -- I have no idea what a sane compromise would smell like; I expect to hear much noise before anything actually innovative.

Nice to be able to reply to a non-patronizing screed from you..

New Bah. Worked in Beantown.
Hey, how about the new consititution in Iraq? A vast majority approved the democracy we gave them.

No, he's still a leader. Just not all the time. At his worst, he's still better than Clinton. Or his daddy.

New Some of us were fooled for awhile, some of us never were
Bush the "leader" was a con job. A put up. BS. Some of us, his primary detractors who you think "didn't like" leadership, saw this all along. "Bush the Leader" is a marketing campaign worthy of Madison Ave. You fell for it. I didn't.

Empty promises and irresponsibility is the hallmark of this insane clown posse and it finally became visible in a big way with NOLA. After 9/11 Bush PROMISED to fix the problem of coordination, command, and control among the emergency response services in America. HE FAILED TO DO THIS. Some of us knew he was failing to do this all along by shoveling money (OUR MONEY!) at the problem and letting all his friends get rich in the process.

George W Bush and company is a group of con artists intent on bankrupting the federal government at our expense while enriching themselves and their supporters.

Sorry you just figured it out. Maybe you'll get it right next time.

Let me give you a little hint:

It was the same Bush.

Your perception changed.

It's possible that you looked at Bush after 9/11 and saw that the guy really did know what he was talking about and changed your opinion.

But I doubt it.

More likely you had your head in the sand, never thought any country/individual would want to kill us (and...scary enough, some have good reasons to hate us) and suddenly had to "face facts". You needed someone who sounded good.

And, someone wrote some very nice scripts for George W. Bush.

Some people didn't like that. 9/11 was a wake-up call to the nation, that we needed to get rid of terrorism entirely [*]. Some of us woke up, and some of us put pillows over their heads and tried to sleep. I woke up. George W. Bush woke up. In the end, the world will be better for it.

I'll give you another hint.

The world hasn't changed that much.

PS: Of course, my talking to a bot is pretty much self-delusion too, so go figure.
