Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Ettore Bugatti would be . . . .
. . proud. He was very fond of excess.

New Yup. You know what the Royale hood ornament was? (img).

I got a picture of the ornament on the 1930 Bugatti Royale at the Ford Museum in Michigan when I was there 25 years ago (sheesh, has it been that long?). It was much more refined than the picture above, but the pose is the same.

He liked big stuff. :-)

Cheers,
Scott.
New Ah, clear case of penis envy, then. ;-)
New The reason for the Royale.
At a dinner, a society lady told Mr. Bugatti, "You make very fine automobiles, but for true luxury one must still go to Rolls".

"You justa wait, I'lla fixa dat".

New In difesa di Sig. Ettore
Not "big" stuff - it appears to moi (nessun reclamo ad essere un erudito di Bugatti) that he -unlike the Little autistic Twerp- was an actual innovator.

Ex:
In many (most?) of his engine designs as featured 'normal' (not OHC or DOHC) cam + follower: he elected to make the cam-follower SQUARE, not the ever-so-much simpler (and obvious) round - as lends itself to ez hole-drilling for its receptacle.

But when one looks at the actual forces on this part, and examines the wear patterns of the round version: one sees that SQUARE maximizes the resistance-to-wear of this part as is constantly being rubbed-sideways by the cam lobe. More importantly - also minimizes er 'circular aberrant wear?' on the cam lobes themselves.

In an era of seat-of-pants metallurgy and considering the expense of new cams and ancillary parts (and labor) -- the extra time for a competent technician to Just Once (at construction) scrape-square the bore, after its babbit was poured: was a sane engineering decision. A perfectionist decision, but not a gratuitous one.

(Tales of the ~'reason' for La Royale specifically, notwithstanding.)
The Type 57SC (supercharged) most assuredly displayed conoscenza completa ... of the power/weight metric of Going Fast.

(Though he also reputedly said..)
Brakes? What are Those !? I make my cars to GO not to STOP!!!

Carrion

New Well, since he wasn't using hydraulics . . .
. . the brakes did need adjustment inconveniently often.

New Yep, heard that..
And would love to have heard his objections.

Don't think they'd spawned wire-wrapped rubber hoses yet ?? To play Debbil's advocate.. Imagine trying to make your own.
