Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Woo, that was close
Typed in "sudo halt".

Finger moving towards [Enter].

Looking over shoulder to see why the kids are yelling at each other.

Miss the [Enter] key.

Look back.

Find [Enter] key and re-aim finger.

Notice I'm still on Knight.

Meept!

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New Been there, done that

I was loading a SPARCstation and had several xterm windows open to various other machines (as root , of course, young punk that I was).

Anyway, when the install was over I clicked on a window with the root prompt and typed:

reboot

It took me a few moments to realize that this window was logged into our main production server. (Hey, I *said* I was young and stupid, didn't I?)

Despite my size and (lack of) shape, I made record time going downstairs to give my fellow sysadmins the heads-up and try to minimze the damage.

"While I'm still confused and uncertain, it's on a much higher plane, d'you
see, and at least I know I'm bewildered about the really fundamental and
important facts of the universe."
Treatle nodded. "I hadn't looked at it like that," he said, "But you're
absolutely right. He's really pushed back the boundaries of ignorance."

New Solution:
sudo su -c visudo

arrow down to the line that says something like:
drook ALL=(ALL) ALL

Do: dd:wq

Havink to be worrink about deece evermore, is not problem.

Also bastard, using halt is not proper. Sure it works and all, but shutdown -h now is better because it does more betterer job of stopping things and then calls halt iself.

New Stoopid noob question
What does shutdown do more nicely? What's the ratio of theoretical to practical in that answer?

New graceful vs halt
graceful shutdown means that stop scripts are used to shut down applications rather than just cutting all processes down while a process may be in the middle of an important job.
thanx,

New What Box said.
Halt just kills stuff.

Shutdown goes through the proper init levels and the halts.

New That's one reason I use "sudo su"
The extra step gives me more time to remember gotchas like that.

Another trick, my default terminal prompt is of the form name@host: so I have lots of reminders about which machine each terminal is on.

Cheers,
Ben

New Dude, I'm using color
If that doesn't cue me in, the text of the prompt won't help.

But yes, Greg, I believe I'll be fixing that shortly. Soon as I figger out php/A2. And my vim syntax coloring.
