New Hmm, ain't that special? Yes, it is!
I think it is significant that this developes after Apple went to Intel for Processors:[link|http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0509g5.html|Power Mac G5 revision expected soon, signs point to dual-core]

This shoots the whole reason Apple said they went to Intel!

(which is just a rumor).

The upgrade looks to be a short term stop gap measure. IOW, they'll plug a new chip into an existing box for awhile to try to stimulate sales.

Anyhow, having multiple processors is good and I somehow suspect Apple will continue to release machines on both architectures for some time. How can they lose?

Well, they were ALWAYS going with a gradual transition to Intel. Most people expect the first Intel-based machines to be PowerBooks/iBooks/Mac Minis.

The professional machines (PowerMacs/XServes) were expected to be last. Possibly once Intel releases dual-core/64-bit chips.

It'll be interesting to see performance specs for the IBM MP chips. Might push some XServe-based supercomputers up in the TOP500 rankings.
