New LimeWire query
on behalf of a G4, PBook user - experienced now, but mostly by rote.
Any experience with this ap?

(Dunno which of its putative uses is contemplated in [link|http://www.limewire.com/english/content/home.shtml| LimeWire].)

I noted below the amount of similar stuff at the Versiontracker link, and have passed that on.

Thanks,

moi

New Very easy to screw up the setup
and share the whole disk.
Be careful.
New Quick! and al punte - passed on. Thanks.

New Thats where the child porn comes from, verboten here

New {sigh} Two competent Negatives
:(

I warned her to take Barry's hint Very Seriously, to get help if she doesn't understand any single item of what she's "configuring".

I think she's M$-free now, but ya never know what the barely-semiskilled are apt to imagine they can get away with. So glad I'm not anyone's conslutant, save for a few 98 hints ..but no more hands-on por moi. I ain't no masochist. These machines, amidst the unwashed, have now tipped solidly to the Darkest Side.

Thanks for tip #2; I hope that Uninstall re OSX is an Effective uninstall - if she indeed screwed the Sharing setup.

New point being this
your agreement to share a portion of your hard disk to exchange files you deem safe to exchange also is an open invitation to store files for others that would merit hard time in a federal penitentiary, needless to say my musically inclined boy wanted to share his offerings to the public, an enterprising soul determined that my machine was a good place to store stuff that would make a weasel puke, luckily my noticing that my disk was much more utilized than I expected found same and started rigorous cleanup.
peer to peer is only useful if it is a download only medium.
thanx,
bill

New You got a problem, then.
One of two things happened:

1. Your boy downloaded said stuff.
2. In the process of downloading Limewire, configuring it, or possibly through a .exe file downloaded over the P2P network, you got pwn3d.

Limewire (in and of itself) does not allow other people to store stuff on your computer unless you download those files yourself, at least it didn't when I checked it out a year ago. If it's case #1, you need to deal with your kid, pronto. If it's case #2, a flattening of your (probably still zombied) box needs to be done pronto.
When somebody asks you to trade your security for freedom, it isn't your freedom they're talking about.
New had a better explaination thanks to Imric
you can only share what you have downloaded, if the boy went I want *mp3* that would swoop up these kinds of files. They are not playable on the machine that downloaded them. I had to move them to a linux box to actually view what it was so it wasnt downloaded for his viewing pleasure.
thanx,
bill

New The descriptions of those files have things like
Disney, cartoon, anime, mp3, mpg, dvd, etc, etc. in them. The idea (I believe) is to get them downloaded and shared as much as possible.

I know when I was playing with Limewire, I found that when I downloaded an entire search, I ended up sorting through a lot of sick crap. Once you know what to look for, you can see it in the search results.

That, and the slow download speeds turned me off of the P2P networks.

New Thanx from volunteer victim:
Had a heck of a time getting that crap out.

Checked, and indeed needed to repair SEVERAL disk permissions which had been re-written for group r/w access. Holy chee-it.

Thanks. And, thanks to those who replied to your inquiry on little Alice in Wonderland here's behalf.
Nice to see that Grasshopper has grokked 'permissions' well enough to notice and restore {sigh}. If she'd done this on Doze.. (but the Dell cured that silliness.)
