New Nifty Google trick to check hurricane damage

I just noticed that if you enter an address in New Orleans into Google Maps, in addition to the "Map", "Satellite" and "Hybrid" buttons, there's now a "Katrina" button which shows a satellite photo from Wednesday morning, and has enough resolution to zoom in all the way. Which is pretty darned handy for figuring out if the homes of friends and relations are submerged or damaged.

New Thanks. There's an underlined link for it on the 1st page.

Update: See [link|http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+Orleans&t=e|satellite imagery of New Orleans] from Wednesday, August 31st at 10 am.

The registration isn't perfect, but it's pretty good.

Cheers,
Scott.
New I hardly ever use Google Maps

or, I hope, I'd have seen the link. Just noticed there's [link|http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/09/post-katrina-images-of-new-orleans-on.html|a post on the official Google weblog] about it, too. I wonder if they'll be updating that regularly...

And now that I know about this, I've punched in the address of my sister's (now-vacant, since she got out a few days ago and went to stay with our parents) apartment and it appears to be in an area that's quite dry.

New It's a great resource.
Check out [link|http://earth.google.com|Google Earth] too, if you've got access to a recent Windows machine. The pictures are from different archives, in many cases, and are probably updated differently, but at least in the DC area you get sharper images with Earth than with Maps.

The source for many of the satellite pictures used by Google and others is [link|http://digitalglobe.com/katrina_gallery.html|Digital Globe].

Best of luck to your family and friends down there. :-(

Cheers,
Scott.
