Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Not impressed so far
OX support for 3.0 is "coming soon", so I grabbed 2.3. The disk image file had ".exe" appended to the filename. Not a great start.

Basics like word counts don't work. A very simple Word document with a graphic didn't import correctly (the graphic disappeared). I created the most basic autocontent presentation in PowerPoint, and that didn't import correctly, as some of the background graphics (a shaded arc) were broken. Text didn't retain its formatting.

Reinvention of the desktop user interface (silly little toolbar thing) is not an endearing trait.

It's shot through with Windowsisms; for example, the current application preferences are at Tools|Options, there's a Help|About dialogue, and the File|Open dialogue is a clone of the Windows 2000 common file dialogue.

At the moment, your $40 is better spent on iWork (notwithstanding spreadsheet requirements) or being put towards Office 2004.

New Right. Java is great.
Rarely have I ever used a Java application that worked properly. Before Scott and the rest of the Java fans start yapping about "it's just bad code. Nothing wrong with the platform, etc. ad nauseum" I'm just talking about my experience - IBM's admin tools for example. They uniformly SUCK and I presume IBM has the cash to find at least modestly decent Java programmers. Write once, run ... nowhere. Unless of course you have an hour or two or something more than a Cray to run it on. How'd that port of WordPerfect Office to Java that Corel tried go? Oh, wait, I know, just wait for JDK 1.7.7.04! It'll be great, when its stable enough to do anything with. Which should be in, oh, say 50 years or so.

Seriously, the Java apologists are as bad as the Microsoft apologists...

[Edit] And another thing. Friendster.com dropped JSP in favor of PHP. Why? Because PHP works. JSP didn't. And yes, I know its two different, but related things.

But, you've created the best argument for Java I've heard. You've called me an idiot. What a compelling argument.

New Yes, IntelliJ is the Bomb!
Eclipse? Well, perhaps I've been spoiled by ED4W, but the user interface for Eclipse is (to steal a phrase) cack. Three different places to set the colors (for C++), and oh, that wonderful documentation-surrogate! A good idea, and probably the right platform for the project. But the execution rather blows.

But I will readily admit (because I have no axe to grind in that regard), that Eclipse's problems are not Java's fault.

New I use Eclipse for Perl
Because the alternatives are all rather poor or rather expensive.

It's got preferenceitis (to be honest, if I couldn't set the colours, I'd be happier than with the set-it-here-set-it-there-set-it-bloody-everywhere thing they've got going) but its integration with svn is nice and the regex editor, whilst not as good as Kiki, is still better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. On-the-fly running gives you spot-your-fuckups-as-you-type which reduces debugging time.

I'm more productive with it than without it.

Around my office we're all pretty happy with the basics. About an even split between Emacs and vim, with one weird person using Visual SlickEdit.

None of us feels the need for anything resembling an IDE. (Though to be fair, the least experienced of us has several years experience programming in Perl, and many more years programming in addition.)

New And...
we have command prompts with the first and last of those (one of the Emacs users built a lot of support into his Emacs install), and compile-as-you-type sounds to me like a productivity drain since often you *want* to leave stuff broken as you switch around. (When I used VB my number one complaint was that it would force me through a popup every time that I went elsewhere in the code while the current line was incomplete.)

I'd also have performance concerns when dealing with over 100K lines of code.

Ben

New It was a productivity drain even when I was a beginner
Because I was generally going to look somewhere else for information that I needed to put on that line. Like, say, what a variable was named. Or to select something to cut and paste.

As for 100K lines, that isn't one file. That's across the project. But since a lot of that is in modules that load each other, much of that would always be in memory if you're trying to incrementally recompile.

New FWIW, 175Kloc of Java, no problems in Eclipse or IDEA here
Compile as you type generally means "highlight errors until you fix them", not "impede anything else until you fix them." VB (and VisualAge for Java, for that matter) was stupid about that.

Emacs is an IDE, btw, so saying someone using emacs had SVN support as a way of demonstrating that you don't need an IDE is, well, kinda off the mark.

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New I think that you'd need language support for that...
to work very well.

Perl doesn't do that. Despite some lip service, I think that Perl 6 won't either. The desire to make hooks available for use by editors is losing to the desire to allow people to do "interesting things" while compiling. (Where interesting can be anything up to and including changing the language on the fly.)

I have also used Eclipse for a while, and it too is a fine Java application. I don't use it for reasons that basically boil down to "Eclipse and all of its extensions still don't do a couple of the things that I want out of an IDE." Other than that, though, I find it a fine application.

New So it's a really short list?
Someone asked for counterexamples to Mike Moffitt's droolings, and I provided some.

Long story short, notwithstanding ObjC, there's fuckall to show for the glory of SmallTALK on the desktop, which is what the point of this thread is - i.e. that a programming language can have decent apps written in it despite being a bit shite around the edges.

After all, an awful lot of software is written in C, which is structured assembler with flow control, and an awful awful lot of software is written in C++, which is structured assembler with flow control, objects and a squillion libraries.

An awful lot of awfully good software.

New Oh very well
Why notwithstanding ObjC? Objective C is based on Smalltalk message sending. Hard to discount that. Also I'd guess that Java programmers outnumber Objective C developers at least 100 to 1. So why not 100 times the apps?

However: [link|http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/BottomFeeder/|BottomFeeder], and [link|http://pongo.sourceforge.net/|Pongo], and of course, [link|http://opencroquet.org|Croquet] (which is not yet done but getting there) and then there's [link|http://squeakland.org|eToys] (educational thing).

Also I'd like to take a second to plug Stef's new book: [link|http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1590594916/102-4622213-5213710|Squeak. Learn Programming By Cotrolling Robots]. Great instructional text. You know, for kids.

Of course, I'd wager that J-heads outnumber Smalltalkers by at least 1000 to 1, so there really ought to be at least ten times more desktop apps that aren't programmer tools, don't cha think?

New Why not ObjC:
ObjC isn't Smalltalk.

Sure, it has message sending, but that and a similar syntax (partially) is all it shares.

It doesn't share blocks, or repository-based development. The former is a nice thing about Smalltalk, and the latter is a suck thing.

In fact, I'd venture to say that one of the main reasons Smalltalk isn't used more is the repository. And for that reason you can't bundle up all the ObjC apps and say, "See! Smalltalk doesn't suck!" because that ain't Smalltalk for all practical purposes.

And on Java programmers outnumbering ObjC programmers: who cares? What percentage of Java programmers work on front-end vs. back-end? Ditto ObjC? I'll bet they're pretty much reversed.

So, a news reader, an MSN client (*shudder*, and still alpha), an unfinished framework, and eToys (which is cool).

And do you use any of these applications? BottomFeeder is fugly on Linux, worse than any Java program has been for years. Looks like old-style Motif. Blerch. Pongo looks better for some reason, but the same as it does on Windows. I thought you were the one bitching about ignoring platform UIs?

Let's check a few other things:

The BottomFeeder image is 25M(! -- repository based development again). Right after startup it's using 42M of resident RAM... 4th in the list after VMWare, Firefox, and X on my machine. iReport, a visual GUI for Jasper (Java reporting engine) is using 10M.

The Pongo image is 8.5M, and it uses 11M of RAM (about the same as Gaim, so no issues there, although Gabber is using 7M). By comparison, though, the Gaim binary is 732K.

So, you're saying, "these are desktop Smalltalk apps that don't suck", or just, "these are desktop Smalltalk apps"? 'Cause neither of them look all that great (and who needs an MSN-only client fer chrissakes?), whereas stuff like Azureus can be considered best-of-breed.
Regards,

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New My impression as well.
In fact, I'd venture to say that one of the main reasons Smalltalk isn't used more is the repository.

That's been my impression as well. SmallTalk always sounded like a killer system back in the 1990s when I first started getting peripherally exposed to these things. But it was a turtle on reasonable PCs. IBM had a SmallTalk push for a while, but few took it seriously. Horror stories of corrupted repositories didn't help.

So its chance to have a big slice of the pie never really came. PCs that were powerful enough and cheap enough didn't arrive in time to prevent things like C++ and Java from grabbing all the interest.

If SmallTalk were able to make intelligent use of the network to grab objects as needed, so that one wouldn't need a 25 MB image file to make a, say, 500 kB application, then maybe it could have a phoenix-like rebirth.

(Yes, the above is ramblings from someone who hasn't used SmallTalk for more than a few minutes in playing with a demo version of a ST or two and who really doesn't know that much about it. But that hasn't stopped me, or many of us, from commenting before, has it?)

Cheers,
Scott.

The argument was Java sucks - no apps, not Smalltalk sucks - no apps.

Objective C BTW, rocks - lots of apps. More per dev than Java.

The argument was "all Java desktop apps suck". To which a list was provided.

The Peter asked for a list of Smalltalk apps that don't suck. To which a list was provided. Now, if you want to provide a list, you'd better expect you're going to be asked to back up the "don't suck" part.

And you're not "done" until you address the % of Java developers working on back-end vs. front-end (non-web). If 1/100 (or whatever) Java developers are actually working on a front-end application (I'd be surprised), then you can start a comparison.

So don't spout, then run crying when someone calls "bullshit". That's childish.

New Whose argument was that?
Rarely have I ever used a Java application that worked properly.

Rarely have I ever used... != I have never used... HTH.

My daughters both use (and I have on occasion) LimeWire and I've never had a problem with it. It loads reasonably quickly, has a nice intuitive interface, etc. For what it does, it's quite good. I know I apologized to you before, but ferchrissakes Scott, think about this for a second: You take my above sentence and imply that it is equivalent to, "All java desktop apps suck." Understand now why one might get the impression that there is at least some hypersensitivity around here concerning Java?

Me, I'm bailing before I start getting called all sorts of names again ;0)

New Things were childish long before this
If we want to address non-desktop apps, then Smalltalk still wins as more productive - ie more useful code per developer working. Most Smalltalk apps are enterprise - client server deals. No Smalltalk is not good for shrinkwrap - neither is Java. I would say that the quality of what you get with Smalltalk, allowing for non-native GUI variation, is much higher per unit of effort than you get with Java.

I have a little firsthand knowledge of the general suckiness of Java for desktop apps, unlike the rest of you whiners, I've actually written one.

[link|http://homepage.mac.com/tblanchard|http://homepage.mac.com/tblanchard] - the JEOModeler app is written using Swing, it models schemas for use with WebObjects. I put quite a lot of work into it and, while it works well enough to do the job, for the level of effort expended, it sucks.

So I'd say I know a little bit about what I'm talking about WRT Java desktop app development sucking.

But none of this has anything to do with anything.

Exit, stage up.

New Who said a damn thing about development?
If programming Java applications meant that you had to stick pins in your face and hit yourself in the gonads with a hammer once an hour on the hour, it wouldn't alter the fact that there are good, nay excellent desktop applications written in Java.

The fact that programming SmallTalk is, apparently, akin to being gently fellated by angels doesn't alter the fact that you couldn't come up with a single non-arse desktop application.

Change the subject and then fuck off? You're turning into a politician. Or a manager.

New Hey Peter
Fuck you. We were talking about Java. I granted you 2 apps that don't suck. I don't really need to defend Smalltalk, its made its mark and it remains the primary fount of innovation in the industry.

Given that Smalltalk isn't build to do native desktop apps, you might as well ask for fucking SQL desktop apps and proclaim it a load o shit as well.

Apparently your fucking google finger is broken. Pity thats all.

[link|http://www.whysmalltalk.com/production/index.htm|http://www.whysmallt...duction/index.htm]

'course, "apps" is rather a quaint concept when you think of it - precious few bits of smalltalk are bundled into "apps", they're just fucking objects that get added to the environment. Ripping them out into "apps" isn't exactly natural.

However, if you'd like to see a few "projects" [link|http://www.squeaksource.com|http://www.squeaksource.com] is the squeak project repository. Some are "apps" (email clients, jabber client, modeling tools) others are just libs. There's not a huge difference in Smalltalk.

[link|http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/publicRepository/|http://www.cincomsma...publicRepository/] is for the visualworks platform.

You might also google 'jwars', its the fucking planning tool running the US military these days, its also written in Smalltalk but if you download it we'll have to fucking kill you. [link|http://www.caci.com/business/systems/simulation/jwars.shtml|http://www.caci.com/...ation/jwars.shtml]

Big Server Software, Inc.
cshankey@bigserver.com
Big Server Software, Inc. Big Server Software has been developing enterprise-capable software using Internet technologies since 1990. Our core product is an E-Business Operating System called Visual Knowledge. Our mission is to develop, license and support Visual Knowledge applications for our partners in strategic markets, and to build global awareness and competence in developing applications with Visual Knowledge. Visual Knowledge Is an enabling environment for E-Business: it seamlessly integrates application development and E-Business operations Is a highly advanced but mature E-commerce platform that has had more than $13M invested over nine years in its creation and commercialization. Provides a real-time virtual representation of a business or of many businesses. Is a software Lego kit that lets ordinary people build complex applications without programming. Integrates and simplifies all computer concepts such as database, transactions, distributed computing and application development. Fully supports B2B and B2C E-Commerce, Enterprise Information Management and Business Process driven software development. Works with Windows, Linux, Solaris, HPUX and AIX (and soon, Macintosh) History Big Servers first major contract was with BC Hydro from 1990 to 1996. This $10M contract mandated Big Server to develop an enterprise level system to manage $17B in assets, personnel, cost accounting and system operations located in 1100 different facilities. The system was implemented to operate over one of the largest Intranets of its time and gave Big Server a multi-year edge in understanding how to build major information systems for the Internet. This project formed the basis of the Visual Knowledge technology owned by Big Server. Partners In 1998 Big Server licensed Visual Knowledge and developed a highly integrated line of products for the business aviation market. MACH-1 Software Corporation was Big Servers first value-added reseller of Visual Knowledge. MACH-1 has successfully marketed their products into the largest charter airlines in the US. MACH-1 integrates Trip planning, crew and aircraft dispatching, customer quotation and billing, cost accounting and several other critical features that help an airline or corporate flight department profitable, legal and efficient. In 1999 Big Server licensed Visual Knowledge and started development of e-commerce based global trading system. This E-business exchange will permit manufacturers from around the world to auction container loads of goods to major buyers. Major program partners, including some of the largest banks in the world, are connected into this system so that Trade Financing, Insurance, Logistics, Freight and all other components required to get goods from supplier to buyer are automated.

EDOR
darin@edor.it
Since 1985, EDOR has developed turn-key smalltalk applications for many industries, with the greatest concentration in the banking and finance arena. Recently EDOR released a new version of its company management product MIDA, written 100% in smalltalk. This replaces the previous version, installed in over 4,000 Italian companies, which was written in COBOL. The new smalltalk version was developed according to the concept of an "object factory", assembling components, or objects, into a finished software application. The project was partially financed by the Italian Ministry of Scientific Research. EDOR is very interested in collaborating with non-Italian companies with the objective of exchanging objects/components and engaging in joint marketing/sales.

The Discovery Manager software follows the scientific flow of the organization from clinical data and genetic map to physical map, sequence, structure, and function. The modern design of the system addresses the complex organizational and data issues created by the collaborative nature of genome investigations. Central to the power of the software is the rich computer representation and semantics of biological objects and scientific processes. Its framework allows the researcher to seamlessly move data from one step to the next and from one organization to another, across multiple computer platforms. A unified user interface provides access to both proprietary and public domain data analysis tools and algorithms. Information flows across both internet and intranet to facilitate worldwide communication. Genomica software thus allows the scientist to drive the gene discovery and functional analysis process rapidly, efficiently and effectively. It provides a more focused approach to uncovering gene candidates, and turning gene candidates into targets for drug discovery.

From the late 80's to November 1993, more than a hundred people were coding smalltalk in ObjectWorks 4.1 for a variety of internal applications. Then, all of a sudden, in a speech addressed to the 1100 IT professionals o the firm, the C++ programming language was chosed to be the *official* language to be used everywhere, and where the specialized feaures of a specific other programming language were not essential. However, some ObjectWorks (and now VisualWorks) apps are still in production and once in a while someone is asked to tweak it to patch in some new features. Isolated, unknown to most people, and mysterious, they do however still get the job done. They are *Legacy* smalltalk applications.

New Come on up!
And the sailing in the Great Lakes is very good, in the summertime anyway.

That's just three hours down the highway from where I live (the Toronto posting, that is...).

New Dunno what your problem with NeoOffice is.
Starts slow, but then again so does the native C version.

Once it's up it works just fine. My son uses it for all of his school work. A word processor isn't the sort of thing I'm going to sweat a long startup time over, since it's open a lot longer than that.

New I don't even use regular office for anything
Apple TextEdit is a great little WP and handles most all my needs.

For more I have Pages. I'm using Excel for Project Mgt at work until I finish the fancy Objective C/CLIPS based tool I'm building, otherwise, I don't need Office type suites so I can't get excited about something that takes a long time to start and consumes lots of memory.

For spreadsheets at home I'm still using AppleWorks.

New That's not a problem with NeoOffice
It's why you don't use it, which is different. The way you go on about it though you'd think it was diced Satan spleen in a lead-lined can.

New That and it takes too long to start
Apps have to start fast. This, BTW, is why I don't use emacs and prefer vi also.

Plus its a ram pig.

So startup speed isn't an issue. I've got the same copy of emacs up right now that I had 20 days ago.

New Jeti. Java-based Jabber client.
Well, on OS/2 it seems to work.
New Re: Right. Java is great.
Yeah. Java apologist. That's a new one for me. *roll* You can hardly call me a "Java fan". It just sucks in different ways than crap like C++, VB, and Perl.

Give me a break. I'm just sick of jackasses saying crap like, "I ran a Java program once, and it sucked! So Java is teh sukc! Everywhere! Yaaarrrgh!"

Sheesh.

New Say the last bit in Howard Dean's voice for full effect.HTH!
New I'm with ya.
It all sucks in one way or another. I'm not a developer here anymore because we're becoming a Java shop. I have reasons for disliking it but I feel no compulsion to list those to anyone whose sole argument in favorite of it is calling anyone an "idiot" who dares question the propaganda that IBM and SUN have spewed out over the years claiming that Java will take us all to the land of milk and honey. I'm getting tired of being unable to even joke about Java w/out childish attacks.

Our "lousy little island". "Anti-freedom".

Really, I'm hurt. I'm stung.

Oh, wait. The other thing.

Not.

All the subject-changing and mindless pseudopolitical potshots won't alter the fact that you gibber like a loon every time someone mentions Java, therefore rendering your ability to joke about it null.

New Desktop Java sucks
AWT and Swing have sucked stellar matter since their inception. Java sucks for desktop applications. Certainly wouldn't want to write multiple, database-based applications in Delphi or C++, though.

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
- Mark Renton, Trainspotting.
New Oh, I dunno
Certainly wouldn't want to write multiple, database-based applications in Delphi or C++, though.

Not exactly sure about what you mean by "multiple", but Delphi (and tis kissin-cousin C++ Builder) was basically designed to write database apps in. And since both have been morphed to target both Linux and Windows with the same source....
