New Question on (base) philosophy behind the GPL Licenses
While I don't pretend capability to parse beyond my adsorbed ken of the nuts & bolts of -?- veritably 'Distributing' the fruits of one's encoding labor / reaping some re-use benefits for/from all - -

From first hearing of GPL and countless epistles since, varying in each's al-punte memorable summations - I'd summarized it-all: that the Task taken-on by Stallman et al was of Herculean scale; that scale of:
stables/clean/river/divert.

As I understand the root of that task, it is an aim and an inescapable corollary ~~

1) How, practically to employ the pseudo-logic of The Law in so unassailable a manner (necessarily, then: punctilious a manner) as to *actually* == precisely-enough so as to:

Successfully temper innate and rampant Greed for the expropriation of the labors of Others, without Giving-Back er, >appropriately<.

(Alas too, all are parseable concepts, surely unfinishable in their implications, perpetually - as $applications grow like Topsy and as new decimal-point Levels-of-Greed are daily surpassed by Individuals: 'owning' the GNP of many countries combined).

2) Accomplish this aim of 'drum-tight legal phraseology' notwithstanding the massively disproportionate number of Lawyers owned by the huge collected Greed-Groups VS the miniscule Freedom-of-Knowledge Group.
[Actually that word should be 'withstanding', above. Or both-ways, in the World of Dualities.]

(Also - was not that insatiable personal-Greed the Way We Got Where We/US Are Today, in simplest terms? (however potentially Terminal-terms.. when history, social implications are someday reconsidered, of course.))

Is the above just too-simplistic to sanely describe the general rubric for all the execrable-but-inescapable Legal complexity as ensued (and will, indefinitely)?

Things should be made as simple as possible. But not simpler.

New It's the magic of Copyright, er, Copyleft.
That's what it comes down to.

[link|http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/copyleft.html|Copyleft]:

Copyleft says that anyone who redistributes the software, with or without changes, must pass along the freedom to further copy and change it. Copyleft guarantees that every user has freedom.

[...]

To copyleft a program, we first state that it is copyrighted; then we add distribution terms, which are a legal instrument that gives everyone the rights to use, modify, and redistribute the program's code or any program derived from it but only if the distribution terms are unchanged. Thus, the code and the freedoms become legally inseparable.

Cheers,
Scott.
New OK, clear enough re intent
Actualization seems to depend on the capacity for ceaseless, daily defense against hordes of locusts; nay LOCUSTS -- insects large enough to run a country (one as as believes still(?) that "its citizens do the 'running'".)

Locust-proof GPL - are we There yet?

Yeah Copy-left has a nice ring to it in any case; at very least, it shall produce apoplexy amidst the $class, merely upon hearing those 4 letters arranged in that horrifying sequence.

New Well, they are Godless Communists and it's Unconstitutional.

:-)

So far, the GPL has held up very well. It'll probably help do in SCO too because they [link|http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20050809082902461|apparently included GPL code in the Linux Kernel Personality feature of SCO UnixWare].

Cheers,
Scott.
New 'Constitution' !?!_Scott, you really be a Dreamer, aint'cha?
