Post #216,735 by imqwerky 7/27/05 11:16:28 PM Reply	Adobe Acrobat 7.0 I am having trouble with .pdf files. Whenever I click on a link to a .pdf or download said file and try to open it, my 'puter hangs in the endless loop 'o frustration. I usually go to task manager and end the process. I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling and rebooting the system, and that used to work, but now, even that is ineffective with the new updated version of 7.0. BTW, I am using Windows XP Pro. Any help would be appreciated as I am ready to scream. Critter is too busy to assist this damsel in distress. Hailp! However it looks like you can get ghostscript on Windows, and that has pdf support. Don't know how well it works though. I went back to 6.0.1 and the problem went away. Guess there is a compatibility problem with XP and the 7.0.2. /me is just happy to be able to open files and print them now. Was perusing fixes for other problems and stumbled on this: On Windows, if you upgraded Acrobat from v7.0.1 or before and you experience HANGS with Acrobat (still being able to kill it) and then downgrade to any previous version and experience the HANGS as well, then re-upgraded, the hangs continue for you. Please, Please remove the 85,000+ .tmp files in your "C:\\Documents and Settings\\<username>\\Local Settings\\Temp\\" or better yet remove all files and sub-directories in the directory. I have done this, to 4 machines here. Worked on all of 'em. There is not even a (naked) "C:\\Documents and Settings" folder, residing in C:\\, as viewed from file manager. (W98-SE-lite, here - but not with the 95-file manager, as is an optional retrofit via Lite. I declined that substitution.) ie a search for that exact folder, with my <username> 'klaat..' instead, produces "file not found." I have Acrobat (4.0) only - and was just curious what Else I might find, despite never having loaded/erased 7.0.. and the above list of ancillary folders is, I see, worth a perusal, while in some moods permitting the reading of tiresome lists.. So then, am I right in assuming that the exact filename you showed - will appear if (and only-if) there has been a 7.0 install at some time? Ashton who can handle small-doses of the punctilious; it's sometimes even ~~fun to nail an errant ';'

Try opening a DOS prompt and typing "set" <Enter> (without the quotes). Note that some of the files may be locked and you may not be able to delete them. The rest should be deletable without incident. Note though that I think I've had some instances when I've tried to Uninstall programs after cleaning out the Temp directory and the uninstall was unsuccessful. Well, if I just Gotta do a WiFi to loll around the creek on my ancient Tecra 700 - it'll have to be via OSX (or that Other). No other reason for me to go--> NT-wards ever. I use one or another util periodically for perusing rafts of tmp, temp-like directories, files; indeed the amount of (esp. individual History files never emptied) is boggling - as noted on others' unmaintained boxes. It seems those utils are ~ equivalent to this NT grouping. {Whew} (Saw an old 95 machine with megabytes! from forever, in plain old visible \\Windows\\temp. Must be tens of millions who have no idea what this thread is about, that pertains to Them.) And if one ever wishes to Totally uninstall any version of Zone Alarm - it is Regedit time and a barrage of 'za' searches; got bit on that when foolishly setting up a friend's box - away from home+utils - and trying to delete a later ZA-version, with new weirdnesses built-in. Wasted hours: M$ only Reliable end-product, any version. ZA thing reminds me of the Adobe gotcha, sorta. Thanks for confirming the >9x matter. moi
