New Suggested media player?
If you have to set up one media player, and use that one under Ubuntu to the exclusion of all others, which one would you set up?
apt-get install godlike-powers
New I vote Totem -- no experience with Ubuntu, straight Debian

New Have had very few problems with xine myself
No real experience with Totem. Currently there's no way that I'm aware of to play .ASF files, as vlc is uninstallable. See [link|https://launchpad.ubuntu.com/malone/bugs/1138|this Launchpad bug report].

New Aren't some .asf files really just pointers?
I've tried to download them, and when I open the downloaded file in a text editor it's just pointers to the real files. Yet another step of indirection to force you to stream the content. Which works a treat when your bandwidth can't keep up with it.

New I use...
Totem, aviplay, xine, vlc, gxine. all with the Windows Codecs too.

I can't play .asf either, but nearly everything else used in the recent 15 years seems to work besides that and the new WMV10 "experimental" format.
