Recommendations for a local caching DNS?

My Ubuntu machine occasionally gets horrible network slowdowns, and at least one problem (possibly not the cause, but it doesn't help) is that I'm using my cable provider's DNS. It would therefore be helpful to have a local DNS server just so that it knows that, for instance, z.iwethey.org is still where it was 5 seconds ago, don't go looking for it again! Any recommends? Easier to deal with than BIND, which is a bit of a nuclear-powered sledgehammer in relation to this particular walnut. The slowdowns are sporadic, so I won't find out if it helps for a while.
