Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Sorry, not getting into a religious war
I've heard very good things about Ubuntu's install, which is why I chose it. I don't care about either gnome or KDE, so I don't care which piece of crap this laptop gets saddled with by default.

Besides it is too late. I have an Ubuntu CD here and I don't have a Mepis one. So Ubuntu it is.

Cheers,
Ben

New not religious, just works with weird hardware

New *chuckle*
I really don't think of it that way - Debian is Debian is Debian, to me. All good. No, what I like is the Mepis HW detection. Makes for major installation goodness, especially with my typical Frankenstein-like PCs. FWIW, though, I've had wireless annoyances even with Mepis.

New Wireless is cack everywhere
There's only OS X has it even vaguely right, and even that has its goddamnit-this-sucks-donkey-dong moments.

New Just make sure when,,,
you "apt-get install help-me-i-have-fallen-debian-support-over-the-phone" you make sure you config the connection as a "Debian-Mephis flavor" as that'll changes a few things... expecially version dependancies.

IOW, when you call for recovery support service from certain peoples, you tell them that Mephis is installed and not Straight Debian. If you don't, it causes them to sound/act a bit in-coherent over the phone.

New Will not do
I'll be claiming that it is Ubuntu, not Mephis. :-P

Cheers,
Ben

New Ah... good thing
It makes sense to have it config'd properly, somethings are default others are not.

Good to make that happen. Lets hope you don't need to install "h-m-i-h-f-d-s-o-t-p" (for short) or "hmihfdsotp" (for really short).

Cheers, and here is hoping you Like Ubuntu as much as the average user I have convinced into using.
