Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Stuck my foot in it big (book recommendations, please!)
First day on job, we're talking about where the system is going. Currently on Novell, we're migrating to LDAP/SAMBA. I make an offhanded remark about possibly replacing our XP desktops with Ubuntu, they say "what the hell, do it as a side project. Oh, and since we almost never touch our training budget, you can buy whatever books you need, within reason."

Wow.

So, what books would you recommend? I've been diddling around, but I'm not hot shit on Linux - and it sounds like I need to come up with a solution that integrates a Linux box with Samba + LDAP for login. Any suggestions?
apt-get install godlike-powers
New Oooh! Sounds like fun!
Unfortunately, I don't know of any books specifically for this...

I dunno - maybe '[link|http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/|Samba 3 by Example]'?

New If you're looking at Ubuntu, look at Mepis too.
I don't know why, but some of us have an easier time with [link|http://www.mepis.com/|Mepis] than Ubuntu. And vice versa. Ubuntu defaults to Gnome, Mepis defaults to KDE. You might want to look at both and see which one is a better fit. A very nice feature of Mepis is that the same .iso can be used as a live CD and as the install CD.

Luck!

Cheers,
Scott.

New Is there a free download? Also, how is package management?
Went looking on the site, and did not see one - I'm not sure I'm ready to go down the PO route yet...
apt-get install godlike-powers
New Yes. Pretty good.
You can get a free .ISO at [link|http://www.mepis.org/node/1462|http://www.mepis.org/node/1462] Mepis.com is the main site, Mepis.org has FAQs, etc.

On the package management, it seems fine. The only gotcha I had was trying to update Java. Some manual tweaking is necessary in my copy (see [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=186764|#186764] and Greg's explanation. I still haven't tried that fix yet.)

Also, I haven't done the minor hacking required to get hibernating to work on my T41. I don't know if it works out of the box with a later version.

imric is a big Mepis fan too, I'm sure he could offer some more pointers if you need them. I'm still a noob with it.

Luck!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Yah - I LOVE the hardware detection...
And the installer is dead easy too.

It's pretty much Debian, otherwise... That's the best part!
