Check your hardware
Linux/X doesn't lock up for fun or devilment. Could be an early warning of something failing.

Works fine with Mepis, though.
Which is a Debian/KDE derivative as well - I don't think it's hardware. Mebbe hardware detection. My next Xperiment will be Ubuntu proper + KDE added. That'll at least see whether KDE is the culprit.
This is my current 'play' box; a relatively new (and minimal) machine. All peripheral 'cards' are on the MB, nvidia video, only 256m w/40gb hdd. The box has no purpose, just something I threw together a couple weeks ago.
*shrug*
It's not really worth the time to screw around with - I was looking at Kubuntu as something to give my Dad in order to wean him off Windows ME on his laptop (ugh). Mepis failed there, btw. Screwed up the LCD display - looked like it was burning out the thing, I shut it off and the effect carried over into Windows - it then cleared up a few days later, according to my Dad. What's with that?
Anyway, I needed something that 'just works' over a wide variety of hardware. Kubuntu failed that test on this box.

Shoot, here I thought...
That Skipzorz was using a good ole Hard-Drive card. 40mb was the BIG SHIZZIT. *2* ISA slots for that puppy.
I should look for the one I recently got from an upgrade and was asked to dispose of the old server.
Hmmm, wonder if it'd even work.

Condolences.
Although I'm sorry you're having troubles, it makes me feel a little better that I'm not the only one who has trouble with Ubuntu. ;-)
Cheers, Scott.

It's not like I'll be missing out, I guess
They're both Debian. I'd just heard so much buzz, I was curious. Maybe I'll give it a shot again if their hardware detection/installation improves.

You'll pay for that in 2 Saturdays!!!
Yes, I had just assumed it was straight Debian.
My bad, I forgot it was Mephis.
BTW Barry, change the line in /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf from MODULES=most to MODULES=all, then rebuild the initrd (or just uninstall and re-install the kernel) and see if it works.
Cheers!

No way
You think I'm rebooting this box again? The only thing that does not work is 3d accelration. Who cares?
