New Re: Try booting the MEPIS CD.
Have a Suse live CD handy - it worked.
OK, back to non-graphical debian.

It tells me my "Link encap:UNSPEC" with a really wierd long MAC address, ending in bunches of zeros.

I then "ip link show" and see "link/ieee1994" for eth0.
Firewire?????

So it does not hjave the motherboard based ethernet configured, and it is assigning the firewire port the IP address.

lspci tells me I have a Marvell Technology Group Yukon Ethernet controller.
On booting Suse it tells me it is a Galileo Technology.

But I get get past that point with Suse, I assume it is trying to go Graphics and then has problems with my nvidia card.

So: I need to figure out how to configure in the chip and stop using the firewire.
What next?
New sk98lin is the driver
[link|http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man4/sk98lin.4.html|http://www.die.net/d...n4/sk98lin.4.html]

Now I have to deal with /etc/modules.conf or some such - it's been a LONG time since I played at admin.
New Greg got me going
place drive in /etc/modules, change nvidia to nv for non-accellerated, learned a bit about debian networking, learned enough about changing kernel to realize I never want to do it.

I'll probably end up installing a play machine, make it my "primary", and then redo this one.
New no big deal, just mainly diffs in Mephis vs Debian
And It would be a matter of me just looking at a Mephis box to "get" the diffs.

Just glad I could help.
