New Vacation pics- beautiful Mackinac Island
For those who dont know, the Island is located in the Straits of Mackinac, between Michigan's Upper and Lower peninsulas. No motorized vehicles allowed. Transportation is by foot, horse or bikes. They are famous for their fudge. When you get off the ferry you are hit with the distinctive aroma of horse, fudge and lilacs. It is the signature scent of Mackinac.

I drove a horse drawn carriage around for a while but the old nag was so slow people were passing us on foot. We ended up getting bikes instead and got around a lot faster. It was a great way to work off all that fudge! Cant wait to go back. Maybe in the fall.

New I flew there with my Dad for a day some years ago
In a C-172. mmoffit will appreciate the lovely approach to the island with the steep cliff at the end of the runway on the rather narrow looking rock with the squirrelly up/down drafts as you pass over the cliffs on final approach. Kind of intimidating.

On the day we went the wind was from the other side where the water/cliff is much closer to the end.

Some nice pics of the approach here: [link|http://www.wvfc.org/events/mackinac/imagepages/image15.htm|http://www.wvfc.org/...pages/image15.htm]

New Yep. Thanks.
Trip is planned for this summer (sometime, if work ever permits).

[Edit]: Nice picks. When I was looking at them I couldn't help thinking of Avalon on Santa Catalina...

New Nice place
I was born and raised in Michigan, so we went up to Mackinac Island every summer.

The thing that strikes you first (after the smell of lilacs, horses, etc.) is the noise level. No cars, no trucks, just horses, bicycles and people talking.
