Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Okay. I'll up the kernel.
Is this a simple and easy exercise? The Debian docs say it should just be an apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8 or similar.

New Pretty much.
If you are using grub as you bootloader, make sure you see that the update-grub script ran and found the kernels you have installed.

If not, as root just run "update-grub"

Then reboot.

All should be well

New Actually, no it isn't.
The kernel is now 2.6.8; the wireless is still broken. I suspect it's still loading modules it doesn't need.

I should be able to find some more time to dicker with it in a few days.

Oh and lilo figured things out okay.

New It works, now!
Kernel upgrade didn't do it, but I think it was still loading the wrong devices. I took these out of /etc/modules, found time to let it finish an upgrade (80Mb of updates a week after 137Mb of updates :-/ ...). Then there was a small iwconfig setting, and it all worked!

New Re: It works, now! - Wifi on Debian Sarge MA401
I have exactly the same problem you are having.

I got as far as upgrading the kernel - and you mentioned that it was still loading the wrong devices. I need some guidance as to what modules you took out of etc/modules - and - something about finishing an upgrade.

any help would be grat.

New I took out the modules 2.4 was trying to load.
That is, orinoco and hermes. Rebooted, inserted the card and the kernel loaded the correct drivers all by itself.
