Welcome to IWETHEY!

New What would you do?
You're responsible for a programming department, and your two most senior people give 1-week notice on the same day. The more senior of the two is not only the only one in the department who is reasonably familiar with the entire system, he is also the only one who has ever administered your revision control system, and the only one who has ever done a rollout without supervision.

Do you:

A) Spend the next week picking their brains, trying to retain what accumulated knowledge they may have to offer.

B) Send one of them home Tuesday, to see if you can make it three days without having to call him for anything; and set aside a half-hour on Wednesday to ask the other how to roll out the site, before sending him home.

Now, who wants to guess what just happened today?

New cross training
bit late for that - give em each shadows and lists of tasks to learn.

The good news is the job mkt must be picking up

"Whenever you find you are on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect"   --Mark Twain

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them."   --Albert Einstein

"This is still a dangerous world. It's a world of madmen and uncertainty and potential mental losses."   --George W. Bush
New Re: cross training
Borrow a video camera and have someone tape the cross training. Then schedule a session where the whole teams gets together to ask questions.

And start the process of managing you're management's expectations ASAP. Let 'em know who much this is going to hurt, what you're doing about it, and what you need them to do. The sooner you start, the more chances you'll have to drill your message in before the crisis hits.

Good luck.
New C) alert management & other departments - slippage ahead
and start the hiring process to replace them.

New You got sent home?
Cool. Jobs I've left had tended to want to work me right up until the last minute.
New Re: You got sent home?
Yeah. Time to break out the GameCube and complete the Heart Attack Grand Prix on Burnout 2, I wot.

New Nope. Still not the right answer.
D) Enjoy the time off, secure in the knowledge that they're on the path to self destruction....., or at least a self fucking.

You're leaving.

It's their problem now, not yours.

Relax.

Fuck 'em.

New You're not the only one who thinks so
One of the developers -- the one who produces the cleanest, most error-free code -- spent most of yesterday asking me, "Have I told you yet how fucked we are?"

New Why you're giving this any thought is beyond me.
I'd be laughing my ass off right about now.

Tell me again why you should care? If they were tossing you out on your ass, do you think they would care?

They've fucked themselves. Enjoy the moment, collect your final paycheck, and move on.

What happens after you leave isn't your concern. Let it be.

New I can finally talk about it
This isn't the kind of stuff you say in public about a company you still need a paycheck from.

Before you press "Save", I want to you to say: I wonder what a lawyer could do with this?
New Re-read the whole thread
I asked what you would do in a certain situation. I indicated which side of the situation I was on. I pointed out that someone still there thinks the outcome of the situation is going to be bad. I never said what actually happened.

Thanks, though, for the reminder to be careful.
