Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Request for Comments. (Rand, Todd, Darrell -- anyone else)
Okay, so the Bossman finally realized we have lost some seriously big jobs, mainly due to our inability to read, process and print certain kind of documents.

We lost a 6 Million Piece job ONLY because it was setup and printed with Pagemaker v7.

We have lost multiple small jobs from local companies mainly because we have now "press-setup"

Plus, I have been using my 1.4GHz Athlon for ~2 Years here, without once asking for something, until now.

I said in a flippant comment to him... why not get me a PowerPC, with the fixings for good print, press, web: design and publishing.

Meant to be a joke, he said: "Get me some numbers!"

So, here is my idea.
With a few applications from Adobe, Macromedia and a few other corporations we could make sure things can be managed properly and who else could better deal with a foreign OS as nobody here except the accountant even has any familiarity with MAC, She has one at home, 5th Apple she has bought over the years.

Hardware most likely to be bought:
  • Dual 2.7GHz PowerPC G5
  • 1GB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 2x512
  • 250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
  • NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL w/256MB GDDR3 SDRAM
  • 16x SuperDrive double-layer (DVD+R DL/DVD-RW/CD-RW)
  • Apple Keyboard & Apple Mouse - U.S. English
  • Mac OS X - U.S. English
  • No Monitor or Display
  • AppleCare Protection Plan for Power Mac (w/ or w/o Display)
Upgrades will come a few months down the road (Memory and more drives)

No for the RFC.

What should I get for Software, I've been told to get:
Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium
    includes:
        Adobe Photoshop CS2
        Illustrator CS2
        InDesign CS2
        GoLive CS2
        Acrobat 7.0 Professional
        Version Cue CS2
        Adobe Bridge
        Adobe Stock Photos

So far, Macromedia Freehand, Pagemaker, Quark Express and Photshop Elements are the only ones I can think of.

Now, recently Rand mentioned another program he prefers rather than Pagemaker... but I have been told to not discount any software needs... as he wants to be able to use this for my workstation and design workstation.

And, No... Nothing like a 30" Cinema display, let alone Dual ones.

New No...I was gonna suggest..
...a 21 inch mitsubishi crt. Brother in law has one attached to his dual G5...and has a smaller 15 to hold the photoshop tools and other sundries so as to not clutter the big screen.

Its a good setup

New Sorry, not stuff I'm familiar with
I've used PageMaker on a Mac, but that was in the early 90s.

The Mac comes with [link|http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/xcode/|Xcode] and standard *nix stuff is either already installed or can easily be added.

Not sure if this would be useful - [link|http://www.realsoftware.com/|REAL basic] is cross-platfrom. You can develop on the Mac and deploy programs for Windows, Mac and Linux.

New You might want some of the DiskWarrior type things too.
Just in case. I haven't kept up with what's the best for any particular situation - maybe Rand can help there. You might have to wait for a Tiger version. In a business environment I'd want some way of poking at the disk in an emergency. Drives do eventually fail.

You might need some 3rd party CD/DVD writing software, though I think Apple added some in one of the Panther updates (or so). Check to be sure.

Otherwise, it looks like you've got everything covered unless you think you might need Mac Office too.

HTH. Luck!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Tiger update for Diskwarrior will be available this month

In fact, it should be available this week.
