New Advice
People who are good at Perl dislike seeing it called PERL. The fact that you said PERL on your ad will be taken as a sign that your organization is a poor place to work. Change that and good candidates will be less likely to form a bad impression sight unseen.

In case you think that it should be PERL because it is an acronym, perlfaq1 says:

What's the difference between "perl" and "Perl"?

One bit. Oh, you weren't talking ASCII? :-) Larry now uses "Perl" to
signify the language proper and "perl" the implementation of it, i.e.
the current interpreter. Hence Tom's quip that "Nothing but perl can
parse Perl." You may or may not choose to follow this usage. For
example, parallelism means "awk and perl" and "Python and Perl" look
OK, while "awk and Perl" and "Python and perl" do not. But never write
"PERL", because perl is not an acronym, apocryphal folklore and post-
facto expansions notwithstanding.

Ben

New Hmmm.
Didn't Red Hat 5.2's installation say something like

"installing the Practical Extraction and Reporting Language perl-x.xx...rpm"

I seem to remember something like that. Maybe it was Red Hat's popularity that made so many believe?

New Lotta people believe that...

Of course, it mentions (first entry) that:
"Perl was originally said to stand for "Practical Extraction and Reporting Language" but that name is no longer used. Larry Wall prefers the usage of an upper-case "Perl" for the language itself and lower-case "perl" for any interpreter or compiler of Perl."

Expand Edited by imric April 28, 2005, 02:18:26 PM EDT
New That expansion has been around for a while
Many people believe it to be the real name of Perl. A notion which is furthered by that appearing at the top of perldoc perl (which is also man perl on Unix systems). OTOH at the bottom of the same man page you'll find that Perl actually stands for Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister.

Those who are familiar with the Perl community will know that both are jokes, and the FAQ is to be trusted on this matter. And will likewise know that anyone who starts talking about PERL lacks significant clues about the language.

For instance I invite you to look for any books on PERL from O'Reilly. You won't find any. They know what they are doing. (Conversely any book on PERL can be safely thrown in the trash unread.)

Ben

Where did the name come from?

New Once upon a time ...
Let the tales begin ;-)
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail ... but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Damn...that was fun!"
New It is a contraction of pearl

You'll note that the source for both backronyms was Larry Wall himself. However that wasn't how he looked for the name.

Ben
