Okay, here goes.
dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xfree86 Answer questions. Make sure you use the nvidia module not the nv one
Make sure your monitor can display what you think it can.
I use the "Medium" way nearly always work better than advanced.
I select "1600x1200@85hz" as my monitor can do that.
My other at work does "1280x1024@75Hz"
Using that method, I have not been hampered by xrandr or any other resolution tool yet.
