New File Open Dialogues
Much discussion about UIs ends up centring on the File Open dialogue, and many people pine for the Windows one.

So, let's collect as many as we can. I'll start you off with the OS X (Panther) one:

And with TweakUI I was able to add the "My Videos" link to the sidebar, though it would be much nicer to be able to drag folders there like some of the other dialogs on display here.

New Evolution (Gnome?)
[image|http://www.chapman-anderson.org/stuff/filepicker.png||||]

Very similar to Panther, except it uses directory buttons instead of showing them all on the screen, stacked horizontally. The "Add" button adds directories to the bottom quickpick section, under the mounted drives.

I prefer the Gnomish way here. Also, the Panther directory panels aren't resizable. This causes extreme pain with long file names.

Edit: According to Peter, they are sizable. You just can't grab anywhere on the separator. Sucktitude lessened, but not entirely abolished.

New I think that's actually GTK-ish.
I see it in the Gimp 2.2 here on XP.

The Panther one is quite NeXT-ish. (And WindowMaker does similar things the same way.)

Is it enough to breathe
Somebody rip my heart out
And leave me here to bleed

Is it enough to die
Somebody save my life
I'd rather be Anything but Ordinary

New Gimp doesn't look anything like that on Linux
Gimp's dialog looks more like the Windows one. This is Gimp 2.0.6, however.

That's VERY like an OS X file selector, innit?

Like this one:

New Only from the standpoint of the extra panel
All of the Linux and Windows dialogs have this in common: as you navigate, the contents of the panel(s) changes. On Panther, you get new panels.

The bit that struck me with the Evolution dialog was the left panel: drives on the top, user-defined locations on the bottom.

New Same diff.
You don't get the bottom scroll bar and extra panels on the Gimp one.

With the word "EXPLORE" in white, smack dab in the middle of a black display.

Must have been the DOS 3.3 version of Windows Explorer...

New Here's one for you

The abomination that xfce calls a file manager/file dialog (seems to be no distinction between the two):

New Now, that is what I call a
Good example of not what I mean for configurability.

I mean, come on, where is the Windows<super>TM</super> Search?

No really, it is a matter of opinion. Tell me Jim, what if XFce's core demographic?

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]
New Well...

Mostly they target people who like GTK but don't like GNOME or want something more lightweight. The file manager is a POS, but it's not required; xfce's whole architecture is modular, so you only install what you want. I have it on this machine because I wanted to give it a spin, but after about ten seconds I went back to ROX.

New Apparently that was the old version.

Here's the latest (from xfce 4.2.1), though it isn't much better:

New I knew something was fishy...
There are no grabbies on the file finder on this Mac.

Not only that, but the Finder->Services->Grab menu items are grayed out, so I can't even screenshot it for you.

New Wot version?
My Mac runs 10.3.8, and I used the Grab utility to get the picture. (Applications -> Utilities -> Grab, by default).

New Dunno. Panther something.
Finder -> Services -> Grab has Screen, Selection, and Timed Screen under it, all grayed out.

I did find Grab under Utilities, though. What did you use to convert the .tiff to something more reasonable for the web?

New Command-Shift-3 (or 4) do the trick, but as PDF :/
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New Photoshop :-)
Was installed on this box when I bought it, and I've forgotten to delete it.
