New Linux font rendering
I seem to be an endless font of questions regarding this enigmatic beast known as "the Linux."

OK, so I was googling on font rendering & Linux and I came across a howto and a few other pages talking about how to improve the font quality of fonts under Linux. There are some interesting suggestions that I'm almost looking forward to trying out. I say "almost" because the last time I was interested in trying to out suggestions was when I was trying to set up a SAMBA file/print server, and while that did ultimately spawn a very satisfying Help Desk storyline the actual project ended in futility.

But I digress.

One of the interesting and universally mentioned suggestions is to recompile Freetype2 to support its "Bytecode Interpreter," which apparently renders fonts more cleanly without resorting to anti-aliasing, and apparently that feature isn't (or wasn't) activated in most distributions.

So I was wondering... why? Is it a licensing kind of thing? I.e., the only way to provide access to the feature is not to have it configured when it's first set up? Or is it a particularly buggy feature? Or was it simply new when those papers were first written, and at this point it's probably working on my Mepis install and I'm just not aware of it?

And if the latter, how can I tell if the Bytecode Interpreter is actually enabled, or if I will have to recompile Freetype2 to get it running?

New Should be simple.
Sine you are using Mephis...

Make sure libttf2, fttools and fontconfig are installed.

If they are, as root do:

dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig

select Autohinter.

If you have an LCD then select either auto-matic or always

Enable Bitmapped fonts.

And you should be good to go.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New Yes.
But remember! KDE has a monopoly on the market segment of people who use KDE!

New Supported - but is it installed?
I had the idea tha Ubuntu came with Gnome - being Debian, of course KDE would be supported. Is the livecd installable yet? Last I looked there was an Ubuntu install CD and an Ubuntu LiveCD...

Nice one.

The difference between KDE and Apple is that Apple has a lock on both software *and* hardware.

New Whatever.
When you've learned what a monopoly is, get back to me.

Why don't you just install OS/2 on the box and have done with it?
