New File Transfer Conundrum.
So here's the gig:

There's a Linux box, and an OS X box. They're on the same wireless LAN at 54Mbps. All infrastructure is present and groovy; DNS, ICMP, all works.

So I want to transfer some 20GB of files from the Linux box to the OS X box. What protocol do you choose?

1. SMB. Hah. 1MB/sec. If that. No sir, that will not do.
2. FTP. 1.5MB/sec (tried proftpd and vsftpd, same result)
3. scp. 1.5MB/sec.
4. afp. 2-3MB/sec. Wait, that's AppleTalk. Stop right there! AppleTalk is supposed to be crap!

So. Ideas on why the "grown-up" protocols are getting their lunch eaten by AppleTalk?

New Put another box on the network.
Linux to Linux.

Measure those.

I'd like to see if you get faster.

And then, finally, by a couple of cheap Gbit cards ($50 or so), put in a cross over cable, turn on jumbo frames, and start moving the data at 80 MB per second.

New I'm a bit constrained
I have a number of directories with Unicode characters in their names (cheers, iTunes) and want them preserved.

New Solved!
I went to the local computer shop wanting an ethernet xover, and came out with a 1394 cable.

Setup was a doddle at both ends, and it flies.
