Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Speaking of.
I've got a PowerLogix 1GHz CPU upgrade coming ;-D

Woo and yay for exchange rates that basically make things half-price!

New Umm
You stole a.. older G-4, yes? What is base CPU speed you're upping to 1 GHz?

As I look at prices for even i-, not Power- stuff, am thinking maybe I should focus on earlier than last-year's. Hadn't occurred to me that there'd be aftermarket CPU upgrades (nor what to think about FSB speeds, how well the glue, memory can keep up with faster CPU and the like).

Doubtless you ran all these numbers before leaping - would appreciate a recap re how/why you chose that particular model + upgrade (?) Maybe I can see better what I might look for in the used bins around this side of the pond. No hurry here to dive in, but I've noted how often it is that: after you decide you're *looking -- maybe the first or second thingie you spot turns out to (Have Been) the best deal encountered! So now I allow for this Cosmic effect.

* motorcycles, especially - missed a Vincent once, while going home for the $$ :(

I think that a used G-4 dual 1.43?? with the fancy acrylic swooshes - which a friend has - is likely still too dear; prolly on everyone's watch list. I know nada about previous carnations to that beauty, except obv each model incrementally pushes specs upwards. I'm assuming that Tiger will work on all but really ancient models. Unclear if a generic SuperDrive can be snagged for less than Steve's markup.

(And as was suggested earlier, ~768M is as much memory as I'd 'need', but lower limit on CPU speed is a bit murkier.. WTF, some day I might do a graphic or Whet a Dhrystone.)

New I have a 466 MHz "Digital Audio" G4.
The upgrade I chose was the best bang/buck ratio; the Sonnet G4/ST upgrades will take me to 1.7GHz, but at $499, that's too much.

Sonnet's 1GHz upgrade is $229 versus the $189 I paid for the PowerLogix. And with the exchange rate the way it is, that's about \ufffd92 :-)

I did look on eBay before deciding to buy new and came up blank both that side of the pond and this.

I bought it from OWC: [link|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/PowerLogix/PF55SQ10002M/|http://eshop.macsale...gix/PF55SQ10002M/]

I'll report back on fitting (that BGP socket looks like making this a doddle) and performance.

If I were you, I would definitely consider scouring eBay for something with the following rough specifications:

Faster than 400MHz G4
More than 384MB RAM
OS X installed (10.3 if you can get it)
No more than $400ish

If you're patient, you should be able to do MUCH better than that.
