New So close ... so tired
If you'll note the timestamp, and what timezone I'm in, you'll see there's no way I should be up right now. But I've been trying to get a new WAP set up. And it's frustrating the hell out of me.

Speedstream 5100 DSL modem

Linksys BEFW11S4 WAP router w/ 4-port switch

I plug both computers into ports on the switch and they see each other. But I can't see the modem or the internet from either computer.

The modem is fixed at 192.168.0.1.

The router uses a configurable static IP, currently set to 192.168.0.200.

The modem handles DHCP.

I can configure the router to serve DHCP, or turn it off and give both computers static IPs and they still see each other and the router's admin interface.

I suspect the modem will only allow a connection on the DHCP lease it just gave out, but the router needs to be at a static IP. Is there a configuration somewhere I'm missing, or am I screwed?

New Put the 5100 in bridge mode?
You might want/need to put that Speedstream 5100 in bridge mode. Then you can use your router for DHCP etc.

New Ahh, will try, thanks
Now just have to hope the router will handle the PPPoE.

New Let's see...
When I had those [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=137017|parts], my Motorola SB5100 fed my DI-704P which served up DHCP addresses. I didn't try using the WAP to serve up the addresses but it should work. (The 704P was a historical artifact of when I was using it with my dial-up service. I just never removed it when I got the cable internet.)

I never did anything to the SB5100 that I recall. I never installed the CD software for it - that I'm sure of. I always had something else serving up DHCP (my Buffalo 802.11g router is doing it now).

Are you sure the modem cable is going into the WAN port on the WAP? Does the WAN light go on on the WAP?

Whenever I had to power things down, I would turn off the SB5100 and the other boxes. Wait 5 s, then turn on the SB5100 and wait until all of the lights reach their steady state. Then I'd turn on the WAP, and wait a while, and then I'd turn on the bridge. It was pretty rare when things had to be cycled.

I hope it's something simple. Sorry it's been a bear thus far. :-(

Cheers,
Scott.
New If it's just power-cycling it ...
I hope it's not something that simple. No wait, I hope it is that simple. No, wait ... Aaauuuggghh!

New I am now X-cellent!
First post from the laptop. It's strange seeing Firefox running snappy on this crappy hardware. X rocks! xdm rocks! Welcome to 1986, YEAH!

Okay, now to go paint the kitchen.
