Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Old hardware *sucks*
So I just did a clean install of Debian Woody ('cause it's what I've got on CD) onto a Toshiba Satellite PII-233 / 32M / 1.2G. Yes, 1.2G disk, not RAM. Did a bare-bones install, just want to get networking up so I can do an upgrade, then net install the rest. Everything's going to need to be updated, so there's no point filling the disk with old stuff just to replace it anway.

So networking on this is through a PCMCIA ethernet/modem combo card. And the PCMCIA module doesn't seem to like it. Docs indicate I've got them built for the wrong kernel. Ok, I'll build from source.

Oops, I don't have gcc installed yet. So I put it on. Then gcc doesn't work:
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.

So I can't get networking up until I recompile the PCMCIA modules, which I can't do without a newer gcc, which I can't download without networking, which doesn't work until I recompile the modules, which I can't do without a working gcc ...

New Do you need a CD version? Which one? Let me know...
New Your CD will allow the following:
"apt-get install build-essential"

This should get you a minimal dev environment that can compile C programs.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New Cool, will try
I've noticed something odd, and don't know if this is a policy breakdown or not. All packages are suppsed to specify their dependencies. After doing a minimal install, I installed fluxbox, assuming it would pull in all the X stuff it needed. Nope. I guess in theory fluxbox can run on other graphical systems besides X?

I did this on a previous install, thinking, "If I apt-get install mozilla, it will drag in everything else it needs to run." Nope. It installed without complaint, then when I tried to start it said that X had to be running.

So when graphical apps don't include as dependencies an actual graphical system, is this a policy issue?

New Installing graphical apps on box without a graphical system
So when graphical apps don't include as dependencies an actual graphical system, is this a policy issue?
\r\n\r\nNot necessarily. Remember that X is a network graphical protocol. That graphical program you'd install may run locally but display remotely on another box altogether.
New Okay, makes sense
That's what I'm doing now, as a matter of fact. After Peter pointed out the (should have been) obvious solution of simply using the laptop as an X terminal. Enable xdmcp on the desktop upstairs, and I don't need to install anything on the laptop except an X server. I could even take off the X client stuff if I wanted to prove a point.

The only thing I still need to get working is gcc. The fan on the laptop was apparently controlled via Windows. I left it on for a couple of hours while I was woking on something else and when I came back the bottom was HOT. I found a utility someone wrote for Toshiba laptops specifically to turn on the fan under Linux. That's what I need to build.
