New Excel via Virtual PC is faster then Excel for OS X
[link|http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@950.cHyfaT2nPVE.2@.68a61f62|Now here's a conundrum ...]
I work with a lot of complicated financial spreadsheets that take anything upto 30 seconds to recalculate. Rather embarrassingly, these recalculate faster on my Dell laptop (W2k, Excel 2000) than they do on my G5 using Excel for Office Mac 2004. However, I can speed up the recalculation on the G5 if I use Excel for Windows under Virtual PC 7 (though it's still not as fast as the Dell). So Excel runs faster on the G5 using emulation than does the "bespoke" mac version.

New Microsoft free
and happy - that's me.

New So what does a chap do for spreadsheeting on OSX?
AppleWorks doesn't really cut it.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New This chap
uses [link|http://www.neooffice.org/|NeoOffice]. It's an Openoffice port that uses Carbon & Java for the GUI. This yields better integration(vs OpenOffice's X11 GUI) with the way OS X works.

New Ooh, might take a look at that.
On the other hand, though, Microsoft do actually write nice software for the Mac. MSN Messenger for Mac is head'n'shoulders above the horrible Windows counterpart.

I'm not fussed about speed as much as I am about compatibility, so I might just spring for Office 2004.

New Definitely give it a try
I've sent quite a few documents home w/out any problems.

New Appleworks is ok for me
I spreadsheet pretty rarely.

[link|http://www.plsys.co.uk/mesa.htm|Mesa] is an old NextStep app that has been updated. I've always thought it lacked polish though.

There is Mariner [link|http://www.marinersoftware.com/sitepage.php?page=14|Calc], which seems to be a carbon app that's been brought over. At $25 I don't see how you could go wrong.

Or you can run the functional but ugly open office stuff under X.

but I have [link|http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopclient|Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac] for work and [link|http://www.macsoftgames.com/products/halo/MacSoft-Halo.html|Halo] & [link|http://www.macsoftgames.com/products/age2/MacSoft-Age2-page.html|Age of Empires 2] for play.

New Get warhammer 40K
I'm losing it over this game. Thank god exams aren't for another six weeks.

I just played chaos marines last night. Watching the chaos commander summon the bloodthirster is definitely a sight to behold.

New Hmmm, from those titles I thought mebbe you still had a PC
around to play games. On the plus side, hw2 was ported to the mac, and this is the same company so maybe this game will be too.
