New help on OSX and gpl compilers
Need a box desparately, went to the confuser store and found that all intel boxen came with XP, dont want to pay the gates tax, trundled over to the apple side and found a reasonably priced imac with OSX and a software bundle. Found a terminal window, mooched around the OS at the cli and said voila BSD(almost). Asked suit about GCC ports, he looked confused. Called a friend who has inet access and asked him to look for gcc or whatever binaries so I could load all my gpl toys I need to minimally function. He stated that he found 500 posts all wondering the same thing and Mac wasnt being very helpful.

Question, do the Gnu tools have ports to powerpc and OSX? Does Mac sell a compiler so I could build my toys? Need to know by friday as I will be owning a new box of some kind, would prefer an IMAC but will get an Emachine for 479.00 if I cant use my toys.
thanx,
bill

New Try GNU-Darwin
Found via O'Reilly's [link|http://mac.oreilly.com/|Mac] pages via Google.

[link|http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/|Here] at SourceForge. [link|http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/ports/|Ports] of BSD stuff. All built for the BSD on PPC which is Darwin (the underlying BSD of OS X).

I haven't used any of this stuff myself.

Best of luck. I hope you're able to get a box you're happy with soon!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Build your own.
(No, this isn't a "where to find gcc for the Mac" - that's already been answered.)

If you want to avoid the tax, order the parts and assemble it yourself. You'll save some money too.

I recommend [link|http://www.newegg.com/|NewEgg] - very nice little outfit. They have EXCELLENT warranty service, albeit a very short one.

New at what cost? an emachine 1ghz proccessor 20gig hd, sound ,
3d video, cdr, case, power supply 256 mg ram for 479.00. The objective for me is dual use, a game homework machine for chirrun which means either Win/Mac and a Nix partition for moi to play with. If I build an intel I will need to purchase a WinOS which adds 80 buks to he cost plus any kind of wordproc. An emachine would just require me to add another HD for my stuff. IMAC does MAC/NIX at the same time simulataneously. Couldnt build an intel box for under 500 with those goodies inside.

New If that's what you're looking for, then go for it!
I just tend to be a little more picky about what goes in my computers... :)

New You can get the apple dev tools
Which are free and make use of gcc. Get them from the Apple developers website.

[link|http://fink.sourceforge.net/|Fink] is a project to port a lot of free tools to OSX.

New OSX developer links
Apple's OSX developer site is at [link|http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/Cocoa/CocoaTopics.html|http://developer.ap...aTopics.html]

Looking through the online documents shows that their compiler _is_ gcc. AFIK, there is a complete suite of developer tools [Emacs, make, jdk 1.3, either rcs or cvs, and the NeXT surplus Project and Interface builders]

Sometime _real_ _soon_, I'll start playing with it myself.
