New Wal-Mart to close store aiming for 1st union contract

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Wednesday it will close a Canadian store where about 200 workers are near winning the first union contract from the world's largest retailer.

Wal-Mart said it was shuttering the store in Jonquiere, Quebec, in response to unreasonable demands from union negotiators that would make it impossible for the store to sustain its business. The United Food & Commercial Workers Canada last week said negotiations had reached an impasse.

Is anybody really surprised by this?

New SOP
Today's WSJ article about this also mentions the butcher's union, which is why there are no butchers at Wal-Mart anymore. I found [link|http://www.walmartsurvivor.com/111802.html|this] about it.
The only union success at a Wal-Mart came in 2000 in the butcher's department in a Jacksonville, Texas, store. After seven of 10 butchers voted to join the United Food and Commercial Workers, Wal-Mart announced it was closing its meat-cutting departments in favor of prepackaged meat.

New How could they be surprised?
Reagan set the anti-union, anti-people tone when he broke the ATC's union. We aren't people, we're resources, to be consumed by the Capitalist class. It's just that we Muricans are more willing to be consumed than many other places in the world. But, take heart, with the international presence our Murican Corporations are building (is that the McDonald's in New York, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo or Buenos Aires? Come to think of it, is this street in New York, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo or Buenos Aires?) soon all us working class slobs will recognize that we are merely the fodder of the Capitalist Dream Machine.

New Don't worry

If they keep it up, I'll be surprised if they have any stores in Quebec in five years.

New No, I wouldn't say that
OTOH, they might find the folks who drive the trucks that deliver the goods to the store a lot less reasonable about things like extra time. Vandalism (rocks through windows and that sort of thing) would also be expectable... and they'll also probably find that a lot of municipalities are going to suddenly be a lot less reasonable to deal with wrt zoning issues, municipal services, and the like.

'Course, depending on whether the person from WalMart is from Quebec or not will have a huge impact on just how much will be communicated to them about why there are problems; I personally suspect that the management at the store didn't have a huge problem with having a union, and I also doubt that they really wanted to shut it down instead of trying to make it profitable; there are lots of operations like walmart that are profitable in Quebec that are unionized. However, when someone from HO comes in to cut the deal with a municipality for zoning, they're going to suddenly find the hoops they have to jump through have gotten a lot smaller and are being held a lot higher.

The way most people in Quebec are going to read this is that both the workers and the management are being punished because they want to do things the Quebec way instead of the American way.

On a lot of subjects, they're the opposite of hypocritical; being quite openly and sincerely nuts.

Not the same thing. ;)

Moi, juis un tete-carree. Si on appellent un tete-carree a face, c'est signifie respecte; ils disent indirectement qu'on y peut prendre.
