Really? Did they change the rules so play was continuous? Like, did the 60 minutes of play actually take 60-70 minutes?
Or was it the same, old, tired, play for 20 seconds, then rest for 2 minutes, play for 20 seconds, then rest for 2 or 10 minutes, etc. ad plenty-o-nauseum.

It was played like regular football, where the clock stops sometimes and runs others, but it was not a game where one person was way ahead of the other, or where it was boring at any point, at least not for us. It was very exciting and could have gone either way, I believe, if certain mistakes hadn't been made.
I don't know a lot about football, but I know when a game bores me to death, and this one didn't. :)

You might know football by another name.
Soccer. The clock doesn't stop. The players move "for the entire game". No huddles, no tv time-outs, no "reviews", delays for "penalty calls", no "play clock", none of that crap. Hell, even if an American football game was played "without stoppage" play would still be interrupted damned near continuously. It's not football if you only have to "play the game" every 45 seconds or whatever (i.e. play before the "play clock" runs out).
American football is a dull, seemingly endless child's game almost incessantly stalled by the fucked up rules it is played by in comparison to real football.

No, that's Rugby (Union or League, pick your poison).
Which is a fast, dynamic game with an offside rule designed to bamboozle you, again in stark contrast to the odd pace of an American football game.
Again, a truly global sport.
Here's a tip; get a decent sport channel and watch non-US sports for a change - you'll like it.
Also, note that there's no popular or serious take-up of American Football outside the USA.
There's a league here in the UK, but I think 3000 people on a Saturday afternoon is a good turn out. If they're getting serious gates, they're keeping it well hidden.

That's a good start
I just need somewhere that explains the differences between American Football and European Football. And it would help to know what Rugby is also
Any suggestions for a good site to give descriptions of each sport, Peter?

It was played like *American* Football, which is a boring, juddery rulefest.
Actual football (i.e. the game that's played by the rest of the world - 1.1 billion people watched the 2002 World Cup Final on TV) is a fast, dynamic game with an offside rule that never fails to bamboozle.
