New Microsoft Cleans Up With Halo 2
Microsoft reported an amazing $3,46 billion net profit for its fiscal second quarter after $1,55 billion for the previous year.

A great deal of this comes from astonishing sales of the game "Halo 2" for the Xbox video game console. So far, they have sold about 6.3 million copies of the game.

From what I'm told, there is good reason that the game is selling so much. People that I know that have bought it seem to think it is the greatest video game ever.

"Home and entertainment was a highlight for us. We're very pleased with Halo 2 results and Xbox Live," said Microsoft CFO John Connors.

"Our Xbox business fired on all cylinders and provided a strong ending to what was a great year for the platform and our partners," said Robbie Bach, senior vice president of the Home and Entertainment group. "Not only did we achieve record software sales with our strongest games lineup to date, but we also sold more consoles than our competitors during the critical holiday sales season in the United States, and increased Xbox Live membership to over 1.4 million members."

Microsoft's Server and Tools business has also been very strong grow 18% from the previous year.

New yup, looks like MS bought the rights to another winner
I pitty Bungie, who felt they had to sell out to MS; few companies survive the deal. I do note that the article doesn't even mention the company that put all the work into the game. That's just wrong.

New I've heard...
...that many people are actually somewhat displeased with Halo 2 - it apparently suffered from "ship it now!" syndrome, in that there are huge chunks missing that had been demoed before, and some fairly nasty bugs in multiplayer. Sounds like the current plan is to release a "special edition" for the Xbox 2 that contains all the missing content...
"Here at Ortillery Command we have at our disposal hundred megawatt laser beams, mach 20 titanium rods and guided thermonuclear bombs. Some people say we think that we're God. We're not God. We just borrowed his 'SMITE' button for our fire control system."
New Halo 2 is literal CRAP.
I rented it for 2 weeks. Just to make sure I wasn't bit by the "Wowee" effect of new stuff. Well the "Wowee" effect wasn't there.

The 2 styles of control configs you can have (which are not re-definable like other games are, or are not designed by Goofy like Halo 2 is in terms of control setup), you can't do third person like you should be able to. Even OLD games like GTA3 allow that.

It is disgusting. "IntelliControler setup Designed by Goofy™" and lack of real feature set improvement over Halo... which was actually pretty good (except for the controller setup).

It feels like Playing Duke Nukem for the 15 thousandth time, but with every single add-on ever designed for Duke Nukem all loaded at the same time, giving less than nominal results (or conflicting "modules making things impossible")

Ergh, bring me a bucket!

New 4 year old?
Isn't Halo one of those game that says Parental Guidance on it?

Note: My son plays it, enjoys, etc.
He's 16.

So they got my money, and they continue to get it via X-Bon Online.
New Re: 4 year old?
I don't think it's as bad as other shooter games like Half life 2 or Doom 3 for kids since it's more like Star Wars.
New I don't play Doom 3 and I'm 43.
Amazon says this in it's listing for Doom 3:

ESRB Rating: Mature (Content suitable for ages 17 or older.)

Halo 2 has the same rating.

Your 4 year old grandson really plays it?!? As Spice said, something's wrong with this picture.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Nope, my 7yo girl likes to play grand theft auto san andreas
and has a clear understanding of play vs life. In fact the other day she asked me if when I got rich could we get a limo and I said sure. Can we get a slave too? No honey you cant own people, my other son replied "she means a butler"

Violent games is interactive cartoons ala road runner and bugs bunny.

I love her dearly, far beyond any creature I've ever known, and I can prove it, for never once in almost seventy years of married life have I taken her by the throat. Mind you, it's been a near thing once or twice.

New Tom and Jerry creeped me out.
They were so very violent - almost for the sake of violence. The RoadRunner cartoons weren't like that. But in either case, in cartoons the characters get up and play another day. AFAIK, they don't in these games. In most games I've seen, there are no significant consequences for smashing up your car or blasting the wrong person.

It's not a 1:1 causal thing, but children and young adults are influenced by the things they see and experience. Kids have to be taught how to become bullies and criminals, it seems to me.

I don't know anything about GTA-SA, so I can't really comment on it. But I personally take the ratings under serious consideration when getting games for friend's kids.

There are always exceptions, of course. Luck!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Yup - that's why "Itchy and Scratchy" hits home so good.
New Exactly. I&S is so funny because they're T&J^3.
I think it's hilarious because it's so over the top, but I think they're trying to argue against violent cartoons too (in a strange way).

I like the fact that the Simpsons almost always shows Bart and Lisa's reaction when Itchy and Scratch is on. It gives me a slightly creepy feeling to see the kids having such a good time watching such gruesome violence. I can't help but feel they're trying to let people know that children are affected by such things.

Scratchy always comes back, so that mitigates it a little.

Cheers,
Scott.

New Re: I don't play Doom 3 and I'm 43.
I am retired (58) and I play Halo 2 with him almost every day and the US Army/Marines would love to see his leadership skills . He plays in Legendary mode and is much better than me at staying alive.

New That's no denominator of quality.
The Sun is the most popular newspaper in the UK. No-one would say it's the best.

Halo and Halo 2 are cack; Far Cry, Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 are all far better.

Hell, Deus Ex (running on the cheesy old Unreal engine) is better than Halo.

*Hell*, Serious Sam is better than Halo.

Another way of looking at it: Counter-Strike is by far the most popular on-line game. It's also easily one of the worst.

And please, it's "you're".

Misusing an apostrophe like that will only earn a "my in the minority what?".
