one huge freakin table with 1000 fields that different applications bounce off of is slow and innefectual. 100 tables with 10 fields plus a keyed index is faster but the application logic needs to be more modulerized. It seems that the world is moving to 4 different tables one written by oracle and one written by SAP one by SAS and one by IBM.
these tables are global in scope and "supposingly" you can fit any business into their logic module. So if you are in an industry and your business conforms to one of the 4 rulebases where is your ability to outperform the next guy?
