Email request
Can everyone who reads this send me a test email at:
broom
@
cpeincmail.com
For you email / network gurus, feel free to poke at it (dns, etc)
This system has been in place a while, whipped up my me a LONG time ago. I don't pretend to know squat about email or hosting, etc. I followed the qmail cookbook.
It seems that a particular pair of servers (1 in the UK, 1 in CA) are unable to email to me, claiming they get timeouts. Both owned by the same company.
Of course they are blaming me.
We seem to be able to get a continuous stream of email from the rest of the world, though.
I assume I'll throw ethereal up to watch the traffic when they try again, the next time I'm available.

Feh, slap 'em.
If one particular company cannot email you from their servers which are in disparate physical locations, tell them to sort out their presumably broken DNS infrastructure and THEN call you.

I can't slap'em. They are a "partner". If I slapped, I'd have to back it up with enough technical advise to be helpful. They claim they are connecting and then timing out. Something tells me the only thing I can do is monitor attempted connection, check the logs, watching in ethereal, etc. After that, what?
If they were Linux, I could ssh to their box, then telnet back to mine on port 25 to see what is happening. I doubt that is the case.

Does your mailserver require reverse DNS?
If their DNS ain't set up right, that could clobber them right there.

Damned if I know.
It has been a LONG time since I set it up. Care to point me into the direction to figure it out for qmail?

qmail?
Not a clue. Horrible, horrible software.
My only advice about qmail would be to rip it out and replace it with something (a) sane and (b) much faster, like for example a dead squirrel set in concrete.
Exim and Postfix are both much better.

Hey, it was a good choice at the time
Was setup in Y2K!
It had a great security history, and my email admin at my employer had setup a few recently (at that time), so was helpful.
I anticipate a system rebuild in a few months, which will give me the option to move to something else, but this one has served me well.
Not one outage in 5 years!

There's one good thing in Qmail
And that is the Maildir format.

Yes. but...
...Exim can deliver to Maildir.
Quite honestly, the completely unsupportable nature of any non-trivial qmail installation renders it useless in my eyes.

Amen, brutha!
I have been using exim4 to deliver to Maildir format for years now. Using Courier-Imap to get access to that.
