New Access field limit.
I seem to have run up against the field limits in Access, to my detriment. Both in tables and forms. It's basically a medical chart summation with lots of variables and no real logical way to break it up into separate tables. I thought about putting it in SQL Server (what we have, no choice there) but there's still the form issue. As it is, I just split it arbitrarily into three tables and have a single form with a tab control containing a couple different subforms with the data from the other tables. Now, of course, some new vars have been added, which means either yeat another table or moving some vars around, blah blah blah, all a PITA.

This is kind of a generalized rant, partly a troll for possible options around the problem in some combination of Access/SQL, and partly a troll for suggestions as to migrating away from Access. We're pretty much bound to SQL for the foreseeable future, and it'll probably be mandated soon to get everything into it for security reasons (I know, I know, you may laugh at that).

So anyway, I'm open to suggestions for moving interface dev out of Access. I still like the environment -- being able to put up a control and not have to write code to make it do every stupid thing -- but it is getting limiting.
New If you'll read a shameless plug...
I just released v 1.3 of my [link|http://www.aminus.org/rbre/python|Dejavu] module, for transparent database access. Put it together with my Cation web framework (see same link); I find it an unbeatable combination. :)

After that, you can not only move to another DB easily, but test several DB's easily, and find the best one for your dataset.
New Design issue?
Perhaps you should use an "attribute table":

You may find some ideas here:

Or if you want to be cutting edge, a dynamic "predicate database":

New Update:
Well, I gave in and just made multiple tables. But I have yet another bizarre problem that is stumping all of us!

Seems the reports I make up in Access are not translating well to other peoples' computers. I'll make a normal-looking report, but when they bring it up it looks [link|http://www.acagle.net/images/badrep.JPG|like this.] I.e., the fonts seem to be all screwed up (preview mode and print mode). OTOH, if one clicks the Design View button, it goes into Design View and everything looks normal. And when one then goes back to Preview view, it looks normal and seems to stay that way for the rest of the session. But then, they can log off, come back later, and it'll be screwed up again.

Anyone seen something like this? It's only been doing this since either XP or Orifice 2003.
New Design vs. Actual
Have noticed differences between the design view, preview, and final views. Usually it's a matter of how much space is eaten up by the characters. Never tracked it down - just made sure that it ran correctly.
New Beware the ides of... Arkadiy?
Do you have "small fonts" set in your Windows display properties, and everyone else there has "large fonts" (or vicey-versy)?

Your lies are of Microsoftian Scale and boring to boot. Your 'depression' may be the closest you ever come to recognizing truth: you have no 'inferiority complex', you are inferior - and something inside you recognizes this. - [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=71575|Ashton Brown]
New You rang?
"Beware the [link|http://www.google.com/search?q=%22beware+the+ides+of+march%22|Ides of March]", I believe.

New Uh... yes, I knew that.
Arkadiy helpfully suggests:
"Beware the [link|http://www.google.com/search?q=%22beware+the+ides+of+march%22|Ides of March]", I believe.
Eh, how do I put this...? The only way seems to be: Well D'uh!, Ark.

That's not what I meant. I was referring to -- and trying (as usual (and failing (just as usual))) to make a little joke about -- Cagey's [link|http://www.acagle.net/images/badrep.JPG|linked picture], in which there seemed to be a reference to "Arkadiy Ides" (or vice versa).

But, hey, thanks anyway.

New HTH. Would have been helpful to look at the picture :(

New Re: Beware the ides of... Arkadiy?
Had a look and both of us have them set to Normal. Although SHE has option to change to larger sizes whereas I don't. . . . .
New Maybe silly, but did you check the printer & page settings?
Access has a mind of it's own when it comes to determining paper size. Your screenshot looks like Access thinks it is going to print to a postage stamp and then scaled the image to fit the screen (which it is set to do.)

What happens when you force Letter size inside the report?
New Re: Maybe silly, but did you check the printer & page settin
Just did. Seems all set up for Letter, landscape. Everything appears to be the same.

They are different printers though. . . . .hmmmmmm. . . . . .
New That WILL do it.
