New Cringely on the mini
[link|http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20050120.html|Mini Me] - According to him, it's all about HD movies over the internet.

Interesting theory. EFF did a [link|http://www.eff.org/broadcastflag/eyetv500.php|review] of an HDTV tuner for the Mac. I tried the HD video clip of TFOTR they put up for demo on my 1.8 GHz G5 and playback was extremely choppy. Apple's [link|http://www.apple.com/macosx/tiger/quicktime.html|next release of QuickTime](due with OS X 10.4) is supposed to handle HD content, but it doesn't mention CPU requirements.

New Vaht, vee haav heerah, ess da kahnspiracy...
But, I can see Cringley's point of view, he has an uncanny way of being right about these kinds of major shifts.

I can see it already. I am sure you can too.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]
New I definitely thought it was walnut shelf ware when I saw it

Its size almost guarantees that it will show up in unexpected non-traditional places. It's going to be very interesting to see what where it turns up.
Have fun,

New Cringely has more on this

H.264 decoding performance is almost entirely dependent on the speed of the processor's Altivec unit, which benchmarks show to be comparable in both chips at similar clock speeds. So if a 1.25 GHz G5 has enough grunt to decode a 720p-24 stream, then so does a Mac Mini.
Only issue I see with this is a lot of sets will not accept a 720p signal. They expect the signal provider to reformat 720p to 1080i or 480p.
