New Ubuntu/debian installation suggestions?
I was in the mood to experiment, so I stuck a hard drive in a test machine and installed ubuntu/debian linux on an old Dell with a NVidia GForce2 GTS video card. Ubuntu loaded a slew of X apps and such but will only come up in text mode. Apparently Ubuntu does not like NVidia as there was a special how-to for installing NVidia drivers (no joy there either.)
Knoppix correctly identifies the video card and comes up properly.

Anybody have any suggestions before I nuke this leper?

New Which Ubuntu?
Warty or Hoary?

With Warty I haven't has LICK of trouble with GeForce 5200 and older nVidia Cards.

Hoary on the other hand right now... has had its share of issues, considering it is the current Devel version.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]
New Warty
New Hmmm.
I'll bet Jeff Waugh would reply if you asked on their User Forums.

He has been more than willing to help me when I had some issues.

New I think I'll RTFM a bit more before I bug strangers.
New It's up and working.
I had to manally install the X and gnome components. It took a number of tries, but that is easily attributable to my incompetence. Not the easiest install I've ever done, but the end result looks good.
Once it was running I installed a lot of documentation. Rather, I asked for it and the system claimed that it installed it. Only trouble is, I can't find it. /usr/doc would have been my guess, but no joy. Any ideas?
New apt-cache search <insert search term>
And then: apt-get install <returned items from query space seperated>

Other than getting more specifics as to what you are looking for in Docs, I canna help beyond that.

And it is rather /usr/share/doc/<package-name>, /usr/doc/ is considered Legacy, and /usr/share/* is now what /opt was for as far as optional shared items. /opt is still acceptable, but /usr/local/... is still more preferred.
