Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Stuffit takes 2+ minutes to start
Not sure why, but last night Stuffit started taking over 2 minutes to start up. When it finally starts, it extracts archive contents as quickly as normal.

First thing I tried was to drag the Stuffit Standard 9.0 folder to the trash, empty it, and reinstall. Same problem.

I then delete the comp.stuffit.*.plist files found in ~/Library/Preferences. Same problem.

I next tried running the Stuffit installation program and selecting Uninstall which gave me options to remove Stuffit and the Framework(whatever it is). I removed both then reinstalled. Same problem.

I then created a new user account. Stuffit exhibits the same problem there, so it's a system wide problem. Interestingly enough, when Safari downloades an archive, it automatically extracts it and does not exhibit the 2+ minute delay. Of course, I normally use Firefox...

I ran Console in /Applications/Utilities and found some odd entries in the system log:
Jan 9 10:32:00 localhost kernel: Couldn't alloc class "com_cisco_driver_vpn"
Jan 9 10:32:00 localhost diskarbitrationd[90]: disk1s2 hfs C569B69A-5E23-3619-A19B-AF6C64F9E2E3 vTunes4 [not mounted]
Jan 9 10:32:01 localhost diskarbitrationd[90]: disk1s2 hfs C569B69A-5E23-3619-A19B-AF6C64F9E2E3 vTunes4 /Volumes/vTunes4
Jan 9 10:39:33 localhost kernel: Couldn't alloc class "com_cisco_driver_vpn"
Jan 9 10:39:33 localhost diskarbitrationd[90]: disk1s2 hfs 52162AD6-E708-3AC2-9BB4-DA0151311142 NeoOfficeJ-1.1_Beta-Patch-4 [not mounted]
Jan 9 10:39:34 localhost diskarbitrationd[90]: disk1s2 hfs 52162AD6-E708-3AC2-9BB4-DA0151311142 NeoOfficeJ-1.1_Beta-Patch-4 /Volumes/NeoOfficeJ-1.1_Beta-Patch-4

The Couldn't alloc class "com_cisco_driver_vpm" message occures about the same time that Stuffit finally starts to run when I unarchived vTunes. That may be a red herring message however as the NeoOffice Patch was a disk image and was mounted immediately, with the same odd entry.

If I force-kill Stuffit before the 2+ minute delay completes, I get an entry in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReport/Stuffit Expander.crash.log(also viewed via Console)

I've done some googling and while I've seen references to others having a Stuffit launch problem, I haven't turned up a solution. Any ideas?

EDIT - found a work-around, of sorts. I've added Stuffit Expander to my startup items. It still takes the 2 minutes to initially load once logged in, but after that any unarchiving happens w/out delay and Stuffit Expander stays open so that the next extract happens just as quickly(wherease before, each extraction would launch Stuffit with the same 2 minute delay).

New Don't know if this is of any use, but
I've had similar issues due to SMB connections - like if I mapped to a Windows drive, and the windows box subsequently went down, then I'd often get delays all over the place on the Mac.
However it's easily fixed by a reboot, so I don't know if it's at all related to the problems your having. Good luck!
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New no SMB connections - thanx anyway

Solved my own problem. It suddenly occurred to me that when I was trying to get onto the Allume/Alladin web site to investigate this, that I kept getting an error (I think their web site may be down or moved). What does that mean? It means that their web sire can't be contacted. Whats one of the Stuffit preferences? - Check for new versions, and of course that's trying to go out to the web.

Unchecked that in preferences (it's the penultimate tab, you may have to scroll) and now launching is instant again.
