New VirtualPC -- any experience?
The SO is an attorney, and hence functions in a Microsoft world (although in a subset: a largish fraction of the legal profession, She Who Must Be Obeyed included, cling like grim death to WordPerfect in preference to MS Word), but being a person of breeding and discernment she despises the Windows operating environment.

She has spoken of getting a laptop one day. I have a line on a splendid iBook bargain (1 ghz CPU, 768MB RAM, 60 GB HD, wireless) for just over a G-note. VirtualPC w/Windirt XP would add a couple of hundred, and the current iteration of WP (now owned by Corel, yes?) an additional hundred still.

Does anyone here have some notion of the performance of VPC with respect to vanilla word processing? That's all she'd likely use it for, with internet access and downloadable music to be handled on the OS X end. I've heard horror stories about performance under VPC, but these have mainly involved processor-intensive applications (waaah!—I'm too slow on the draw in Quake XXVIII!), and doesn't give me an idea of whethere there's a downside on the low-end. Her existing PC is probably about four or five years old.

Comments?

cordially,
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.
New It'll work.
Word 2000 in RealPC on a 266MHz Lime iMac was usable.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New Yes, I think she'd be fine with that.
Have VPC running on wife's iBook for a stats package that was required for her research statistics class. It's a pretty math intensive app (duh) but runs nicely under VPC on her machine, a 14" iBook with 1.25ghz G4 and 256m RAM. It's no speed demon, the same package runs noticebly faster on my work laptop (HP 1.4ghz centrino with XP), but it's more than usable. I think word processing would run fabulous in that setup, especially given the added RAM.

New To both
Thank you for swift response. I'm going to go ahead and splurge for the package, then.

New how it worked out
See comment posted upthread. Best computer retail transaction I've had in 22 years. This is faint praise on the face of it, because so many of them, pre-eminently the first, were stinkers, but this was a great deal for a great unit that performs as advertised and then some.

Perhaps best of all: I took today and Thursday off (Friday will be an employer gimme) because the seller assured me Monday night that I could expect delivery this week. The unit arrived in under 72 hours. I've burned vacation days times past upon solemn assurances of deliveries that didn't take place until the following week.

New possible alternative
You might want to take a look at [link|http://trinity.neooffice.org/index.php|NeoOffice 1.1 Beta]. Apparently, it has WordPerfect support (and Word as well). The Alpha versions have been very stable and work very well.
Have fun,

New Will run about P3 - 700 speed
Which...for word processing...is plenty fast.

Worked on VPC on much less of a machine and vpc was fine. Never with XP though...maxed out at 2k.
