Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Laptops these days are great...
...but it's my so very 'umble opinion that desktop LCD screens are brighter and have better viewing angles than their power-conscious cousins.

Certainly my Dell 1800FP is better on both scores than any laptop screen I've encountered.

Mind you, this does not diminish my lust for a 17-inch PowerBook one jot :-)

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New I take it that an 1800FP is better than an E173FP?
I have the latter on my desk at work. While it's not shite, my 4yo Sony VAIO has a distinctly better screen. A search at dell.com for 1800FP yields no results, BTW.

Wade.

Is it enough to love
Is it enough to breathe
Somebody rip my heart out
And leave me here to bleed

Is it enough to die
Somebody save my life
I'd rather be Anything but Ordinary
Please

New Oh, much.
The E173B is $250 bargain-basement shite. Plus your Vaio has the disadvantage of Being A Vaio.

Dell seem to not do the 1800FP any more; when I bought my Dimension system last year, the 1800FP was a \ufffd500 option.

Here's a review with pics:

New Lousy comparison photos
They should put up some full-size screen captures so we can really compare the quality.

New Fun thing to do with dual-head systems
Plug an LCD into one and a CRT into the other. Set it up so they both inhabit the same desktop. Open a large window with some text and an image, and place it so it spans both monitors side-by-side. You'll suddenly realize why your eyes hurt whenever you use the CRT for long periods.

Speaking of which, whenever I glance down at my hands while typing -- a habit I just can't seem to break -- the flicker from the CRT becomes much more pronounced. Anyone know why that is?

New Peripheral vision.
Your peripheral vision is more sensitive to some things than your direct vision. It's a survival thing - e.g. if you're hunted, you need to be able to quickly detect motion of a predetor.

See, e.g., [link|http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:StzWb2cVhbwJ:www.it.bton.ac.uk/staff/rng/teaching/notes/Vision.html&hl=en|this] (cached) page of lecture notes for more details.

Cheers,
Scott.
