New Repairing Windows 2000
I have a VMWare installation with Win2K. I recently installed a printer driver (d-link print server), the setup program of which (I belive) is now causing VMWare to abort without an error message before the graphical interface shows up.

I have a Win2K installation disk, and can get into the repair console. Any ideas on where to proceed from there? And what does the "repair this installation" option do? Would that retain the current program installations and settings, or does it just completely blow away the registry?

I can't get to the point where I can uninstall the drivers. I think it's actually the second-stage install that isn't completing.

I'm ashamed to say that I can't find the diskettes. I just have the CD.

New You should have the ability to
do a last-known good... or a new "safemode" depending upon SP4 is installed or not.

Either of those should let you roll back the driver.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

It's not clear from the information I've been able to find. I think it overwrites a lot of stuff, but I'm not sure.

[link|http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/wxprcons.html|This] page talks in some detail about what can be done with the recovery console. Scroll down to "listsvc" for information about services and drivers you can turn on or off. Lots of luck figuring out which ones to disable though. :-(

Knoppix has some Win recovery stuff. "Knoppix Hacks" describes some of the things that can be done in Chapter 7. You can read it online at O'Reilly. It's not clear whether you can get it free. Try [link|http://safari.oreilly.com/?x=1&mode=toc&sortKey=title&sortOrder=asc&view=W&xmlid=0596007876&g=&catid=&s=1&b=1&f=1&t=1&c=1&u=1&r=&o=1&n=1&d=1&p=1&a=0&srchText=|here]. It doesn't look like it would be trivial to make repairs, but you might be able to use it to save things that might be overwritten.

My guess is the simplest thing (if the wown link isn't helpful) is to backup your Windows installation, try a repair using the Windows CD and see if that fixes things. If you lose too much customization, you'll be able (in principle) to restore the overwritten files.

Best of luck!

Cheers,
Scott.
New That did the trick!
I disabled the print spooler and up it came, thanks!

I re-enabled the spooler, rebooted, and it still boots fine. There was just something in that first reboot that was borking it.

New Re: Repairing Windows 2000
If you know what .SYS file is installed in %SYSTEMROOT%\\SYSTEM32\\DRIVERS, then you can rename that at the recovery console.

Other than that, you're likely screwed and facing a reinstall; in which case selecting "repair" when you boot off the installation CD is worth a bash.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New If you're using VMWare...
you should take complete backups regularly. That makes restoring to "last known good state" much easier.

Ben
