Hundreds of inquiries from managers and executives seeking to improve their own or their workers' writing pop into Hogan's computer in-basket each month, he says, describing a number that has surged as e-mail has replaced the phone for much workplace communication. Millions of employees must write more frequently on the job than previously. And many are making a hash of it.
----
So we're back to writing letters as a primary means of communication. I like it actually. But it seems we've let our skills slide a bit.

New Maybe not
When I worked helpdesk at a law firm, I saw senior attorneys all the time who wouldn't even know how to turn their computers on. (Didn't stop them from demanding the latest and greatest, but that's another issue.) They dictated, secretaries transcribed and printed, and the attorneys would make edits in red ink. The younger attorneys generally didn't need secretaries except for filing and making copies. They did their own typing.

Also, like the artcile said, email is replacing a lot of communication that used to be over the phone. So people at all levels of business who never would have written anything themselves 20 years ago are finding that they have to. Schools haven't yet caught up to the fact that a lot more people are going to have to write.

New Good thing I enjoy writing :)
I still write snail-mail (U.S. Postal Service) mail, frequently, and send cards and letters that way. Granted, my choice is now to type them on the computer rather than hand write them, mostly because I send the same letter to so many people, but I still pen by hand, the odd note or card here and there. :)

And I still prefer a pencil or pen to write notes with or anything else of importance even if I transcribe it to the computer later. :)
