New Dumpster Diving for Armor

A visit to American troops who've been stationed in Iraq has not gone according to plan for the US Secretary of Defence, Donald Rumsfeld. At a base in Kuwait Mr Rumsfeld was put on the defensive by soldiers who complained about having their tours of duty extended and lacking protective equipment.

Many of the troops are national guardsmen and reservists, who make up to 40 per cent of the American forces in Iraq. They complained about being forced to remain on active duty \ufffd one soldier told Mr Rumsfeld they were even forced to rummage through local dumps for material to armour their vehicles.

New Event getting some airplay on PBS, at least
Heard the tape twice, today; best part was after Rummy said, "I didn't hear the first part of your question; could you repeat it?" - and the man spelled it all out in details even a retard could grok. (Later, some commentator mentioned, "the speaker would not be disciplined".)

How nice. Now, were this a Demo Invasionmeister/Emperor and such reports surfaced. . .

uh huh uh huh huh huh

USA - a lying, bungling bunch of sad sacks on world display; world also noting: it don't make no difference; Muricans Love It. Don't travel without your designer Kevlar vest and cards in 26 languages..

I'm really SORRY - you see, I didn't vote for these maniacs. Honest!
New Also heard on the radio news here this morning.

"Here at Ortillery Command we have at our disposal hundred megawatt laser beams, mach 20 titanium rods and guided thermonuclear bombs. Some people say we think that we're God. We're not God. We just borrowed his 'SMITE' button for our fire control system."

Armor Holdings Inc., the sole supplier of protective plates for the Humvee military vehicles used in Iraq, said it could increase output by as much as 22 percent per month with no investment and is awaiting an order from the Army.

Just a bit to put the final dot on Rumsfelds statement. Armor Holdings is not producing trucks at full capacity right now, let alone working over time.

The article does point out however that the companies monthly capacity was 60 a month last year, and only reached the current 450 a month recently.

G.I.S' PAYCHECKS FUND TRUCK ARMOR

"So the Pentagon leadership has finally recognized that they need to armor up their trucks. But they've settled on a damn peculiar way of paying for the work. They're dipping into soldiers' paychecks to do it.
"

"With that money gone, there's now only enough cash left in the register to keep paying soldiers until May or so. If a "supplemental" budget bill \ufffd rumored to be $75 billion or more -- isn't passed by then, there will be no paychecks for G.I.s. "

New The supplement will be passed
This really isn't risky, as the supplemental money for Iraq will be passed. The only real question is how much other pork will get stuffed in along the way. It's been obvious since mid summer that it would be necessary, it was just something that the Republicans refused to talk about before the election.

The interesting question is why the soldiers payroll money? There are any number of long term, high budget military projects they could have taken the money from. I suspect the military brass felt that returning the soldiers pay is a sure thing, money taken from anything else might not get replaced.
