New Mailing List Discussion
I'm branching this to Admin. Stay on topic, people.

I have made a number of attempts at reaching Rob Nelson, all of which have met with failure. I would like at this point to reiterate that Rob has done a sterling job for a number of years and for that I, for one, am extremely grateful. At the moment it seems that, for whatever reason, he cannot offer a continuing mailing list service.

I am prepared to host the mailing list, as is Jack T, for the same reasons you cite.

I have a Debian box on a permanent net connection available.

I'm also prepared to reprise my role as listadmin.

Thoughts? Do we want mailman, or do other tools work better for us? I don't really want to go down the mailman route if there's something out there that's a better fit. Indeed, do the programmers out there want to write something?

[Whoever hosts the mailing list will probably want to liaise with Greg in order to set up the appropriate iwethey.org pointer records, too.]

New Yes.
:-)

I don't know the mechanics of running a mailing list. I don't know what software would be best. I don't know if there's any reason to have it on Debian versus OS/2.

Having a (at least quasi-) permanent connection on a box different from knight is important. The rest is something that should be left to the person who spends the time hosting it, I think. At least as long as the host is comfortable with the possible security issues and is willing to work to make the gurus here happy.

I would suggest that whoever ends up being the e-mail admin that they have a thick skin and that a "code of conduct" (or something) posted to minimize misunderstandings about the list. :-( I don't know if it's appropriate to consider an IWeThey "advisory council" or something so that things can be run by consensus if a problem arises.

My $0.02.

Cheers,
Scott.
New A Simple Code Of Conduct

(3) Your “helpful mail” is someone else's spam. See (1)
(4) I’ve read all the forwarded email jokes that ever existed.

Additions?

New Admin's list is pretty good.
[link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/forum/show?forumid=5|http://z.iwethey.org...um/show?forumid=5]

Your list is good, but it leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Mr. S thought his actions were helpful and he thought previous discussion had indicated it was OK with notice. I think we need something a bit more explicit than your list to keep things like the blowup that resulted then from happening again.

The main things I'd worry about are:

a) Ways to keep arguments spiraling out of control. Would there be a way of sending arguing people to the virtual Siberia for a period of time? Would the admin be willing to take that action and would the others on the list be OK with that?

b) Should new members of the list be on probation for a period? I don't think we want people joining just to get access to others e-mail addresses, for example. I'm not sure how that would work in practice though.

c) What would the "banning" position be?

d) Would we be able to keep our relative anonymity on the mailing list if we chose? I.e. could header information be munged or somehow minimized to reduce identifying information? How much logging of IP numbers, etc., would you be doing?

Things like a-c should be explicit in the policy, IMHO. D) should be thought about for those who may want to post from work, etc.

Cheers,
Scott.
New I was being a little facetious.
What I don't want to happen is for us to produce a weighty tome for the ruleshounds to beat people with.

"A-HA! You have transgressed paragraph 27j of volume 1, section 12, subsection K2, sub-subsection "use of transitive verbs in the discussion of apples", second meaning! You must be banned from the list for 3.75 days!"

However, we must not go to the other ridiculous extreme which just ends up, as you point out, being "do what I think is right, but I'm not telling you what that is right now".

I would have named you as one of the most likely here to be such a rules hound if such a set of rules existed.

New Yeah! :P
The mail manager I use is called MajorMajor, and the mail server is called Weasel. They're both written in Modula by a very good programmer in Australia called Peter Moylan, who teaches CS at the University of Newcastle.

They're intended to be simple, robust, and easy to use. So... no fancy stuff, but the basics are all there and I can prolly get one set up in fifteen or twenty minutes. The only issue is that in order to properly support handling mail for iwethey.org, I'll have to get Weasel Pro, so that I can support different email addresses for different domains; the only other option would be for me to set up another machine to host it. That'll take me a few days...
