Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Desktop publishing...
What do people use? My mom is considering a Mac to replace a PC that got fried by lightning. She does brochures, stuff like that.

New There's lots
I understand that [link|http://guide.apple.com/action.lasso?-database=macosguide&-layout=cgi_detail&-response=/ussearch/detail.html&prodkey=3299&-search|Quark Xpress] is an industry standard. There's [link|http://guide.apple.com/action.lasso?-database=MacOSGuide&-layout=cgi_search&-search&-response=ussearch/hitlist.html&-maxrecords=20&-noresultserror=uscategories/noresultscat.html&cfc=639|many such apps] available, though. The mac really made a name for itself in the publishing and printing industries early on.

(I did some database work for a book publisher in the late 80's, so that knowledege is quite dated now..)

New I still love PageMaker
I haven't used it since 5.0, and only used Quark briefly. But seven years later there are still things I wish I could do.

One thing for her/you to consider is the difference between a DTP app and a word processing app. To something like Word or WordPerfect, each file is a single document. You may have graphics and text boxes, but it's all part of the same doc. If you add text to a paragraph it reflows everything after.

With a real DTP app every item is a separate document. You can delete/resize/move any item without affecting any other item, and you can have one document span multiple text areas. The "document" you're working with is a set of pages, and you place items on those pages.

If you've never worked with one yourself, supporting her will require using it some yourself. Your assumptions about how a word processor work won't be relevant.

New Still have PageMaker v5
Before Adobe decided to buy aldus and make improvements.

I hate Pagemaker for all the tweaks they put in.

By far the best version I ever used and still use is version 5.

It was NEW when Windows for WorkGroups was Brand New. I still say that you cannot do a better layout interface. They just had it right.

Then Adobe stepped in and improved it.

Sure, current Pagemaker is great, but I still prefer the spartan interface Aldus just made work and work well. You'd just have to see it.

Scribus is about as close to that as I have found, but it works a bit differently... very nice though, installs on Debian just fine from the archive.

Quark Express is another of those programs where "Earlier Versions were better". Although I do have to say I'd much rather use Quark Express the Page Maker right now.

In the end, they mostly all do a fine job. Heck, I like LyX myself for many things and it just works.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New They definitely steepened the learning curve
Professionals doing creative marketing or magazine layout use everything it's got to offer. Most people, include me when I was laying out newspapers, need the same 8 tools for 99% of what they do. I think trying to make the PageMaker interface look as much like PhotoShop as possible was a mistake. They're different tools for different purposes.

New Adobe InDesign
[link|http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/main.html|http://www.adobe.com...ndesign/main.html]

This is the new kid on the block and its gaining fast.

Quark has had major issues with late and buggy updates (OS X support took forever to come out).

PageMaker is owned by Adobe and is basically deprecated.

Best deal I could find: [link|http://store.storagestor.net/17adincs30ma.html|http://store.storage...17adincs30ma.html]

New Mmh. Makes we wish I had a school ID :)
New Easy to get
go register for a class, get your id, drop, get a refund.

The student versions typically come with no support and are often not upgradeable.

They are cheap though!
